Wow, thanks for the link. I've been aware of the rate at which gun homicides have decreased by almost 50% since 1993, but this is a great accessible article that I can send to people who seem to have misconceptions about gun homicide rates.

LA Times no less...

In reference to Americans thinking gun crime is up... The first thing I learned in journalism was to write at an 8th grade reading level, because that is the level the average American comprehends. That is why so many Americans have no clue as to the facts - they simply believe the media spin.

While I find it amusing that a 20 year trend is getting so much attention today (lots of small headlines reporting the same thing), I am very glad to see that this is getting exposure. I've already shared links to a few of the headlines via social media, to try to get the word out. By "get the word out", I mean, "get this some exposure on the other side".

I don't suppose the crime is down in some areas, up in those most "amenable" to anti-gun propaganda; hence why many may believe (in addition to media-magnification) crime is up overall? And how much of the reduction came from just New York's change from third-world hell-hole to mostly-reasonably-safe place to live ?

I'm always more interested in geographical trends than aggregate numbers for these demographic questions ;)

The antis will use this information to support the validity of their recent attempts at restricting our rights, despite the indisputable fact they are non-correlative.

Yes! The mere threat of gun control being passed since Aurora has been enough to suppress the crime rate for over the last decade! :what: Truly incredible, I must say.

NBC featured it on Nightly News tonight, right after the Cinci kidnap and sexual assault in the military stories.

In less than two decades, the gun murder rate has been nearly cut in half. Other gun crimes fell even more sharply, paralleling a broader drop in violent crimes committed with or without guns. Violent crime dropped steeply during the 1990s and has fallen less dramatically since the turn of the millennium.
Still, there are those that think banning guns is the answer. Unconstitutional you say? Why, then let's just change the Constitution. After all, maybe it's outdated....yada yada. Save us from well-meaning but nonetheless ignorant people.

jeez I hope police do not see this as they will buy more tanks machine guns grenades APC's etc being the more crime goes down the more military hardware they tell us they need
