So my dad and I found a bit of a family heirloom while cleaning out a closet today that we thought was lost... what appears to be a .68 caliber pocket pistol from 1818. The only information about it is that my great grandfather returned from WWI with it. That's literally it. Barrel is 5", and the action appears to be functional. As the pictures show, the finish is good for being almost 200 years old, with a few small chips and little rust. Anyone have any idea what it is? Glock 29 is included for comparison.

I think that is the Model 1763 French Gendarmerie (police) pistol, made at the Royal Manufactory at Maubeuge, France. 1818 might be a rebuild or issue date; it would be too late to be the date of manufacture. The gun appears to be missing its grip straps and butt cap. I have no idea of the value.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Some additional information:

- The buttcap is difficult to see in the pictures, but is still there.

- The first line of writing appears to be "Manuf. Roy"... the second line is tough to read, even with a magnifying glass and 15/20 vision.

- There is a capital letter "C" in an oval over the first line of calligraphy, with a crown on top of it.

If any of that helps. 1818 is stamped on the barrel, too.

"Manuf. Roy." is Manufacture Royale. I gave the English translation.

Cool. Any idea what it's worth? Doubt I'd want to sell it, but it'd be interesting to know.
