Is this legal in Colorado?
I've always wondered but never asked.
I mean if I'm open carrying but want to take it off in the car, can I put it in the glove box? Or is that concealing it?

Google CRS 18-12-204 it will answer your question specifically.
If can otherwise own a handgun , you may conceal it in your vehicle for the lawful purpose of selfdefense. If you pass THRU a jurisdiction that doesn't allow this (I.E Denver) you are ok regardless of how many times you stop in that jurisdiction.

treo is right, but that's not the whole answer.

I've heard that more guns are stolen from glove compartments of parked cars than from any other place. I can't verify that, but it sounds reasonable.

I have had my cars broken into twice while parked on the street in Denver. I would never leave a gun in the glove compartment.

Jim M,I agree a gun in even a locked glove compartment is a worrisome thing. But if you have to drive to one of CO off limits areas and go inside ,what do you do?
Drive there unarmed or come up some other solution?
I am not chastising you, just wondering as I am constantly confronted with the same dilemma in Florida which has more OL areas than CO.

Colorado off limits:
(2) A permit issued pursuant to this part 2 does not authorize a person to carry a concealed handgun into a place where the
carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law. Page 18senate
bill 03024

(3) A permit issued pursuant to this part 2 does not authorize a person to carry a concealed handgun onto the real property,
or into any improvements erected thereon, of a public elementary, middle, junior high, or high school; except that:
(a) A permittee may have a handgun on the real property of the public school so long as the handgun remains in his or her
vehicle and, if the permittee is not in the vehicle, the handgun is in a compartment within the vehicle and the vehicle is
locked.
(b) A permittee who is employed or retained by contract by a school district as a school security officer may carry a
concealed handgun onto the real property, or into any improvement erected thereon, of a public elementary, middle, junior
high, or high school while the permittee is on duty.
(c) A permittee may carry a concealed handgun on undeveloped real property owned by a school district that is used for
hunting or other shooting sports.
(4) A permit issued pursuant to this part 2 does not authorize a person to carry a concealed handgun into a public building
at which:
(a) Security personnel and electronic weapons screening devices are permanently in place at each entrance to the building;
(b) Security personnel electronically screen each person who enters the building to determine whether the person is
carrying a weapon of any kind; and (c) Security personnel require each person who is carrying a weapon of any kind to
leave the weapon in possession of security personnel while the person is in the building.

You may keep a handgun anywhere in your vehicle, loaded or not, anywhere in the state. Denver will try to screw with you on this one, but you're covered by C.R.S. 29-11.7-103 (state law preemption) and C.R.S. 18-12-105.6(2).

Please note that while state law does not regulate the manner in which a firearm is transported in a private vehicle, DOW regulations stipulate that longarms must be cased and unloaded. This regulation has to do with hunting.

Wal-Mart markets a little pistol safe for less than 25$. it fiits in your car quite nicely

treo,I have a similar safe bought at Wal-Mart made by Brinks for $35.00.
On long trips for FOPA purposes I use it in places like PRMD and PRNY in my SUV.
But its not bolted to the floor. Is yours?

I dont keep mine in my glove box, it stays in teh cneter console...not much better. :/ When I can afford a safe, I will be getting one for under the center seat. Since I cannot keep it at my place of residence...it has to stay in the truck unless I am carrying around town

Both times that my cars were broken into in Denver, the thief accessed the glove compartment. They are fairly easy to pry open, and the thieves do a lot of damage just getting my leather gloves and half a roll of nickels for the parking meter. I would certainly not leave a gun there, after my two experiences.

If you drive a conventional sedan, the trunk is somewhat safer. In the second break-in, the thieves tried to pry open the trunk, and even removed the back seat to try to get into the trunk. They didn't succeed.

I would be very cautious about leaving a gun in the trunk, but it is certainly better than the glove box, unless your car has one of those buttons or levers that let you open the trunk from the passenger car without a key.

The best place for a gun is on you. When I have to go to a non-premissive environment in Denver, such as court, I don't take a gun with me that day. Heck, I avoid Denver as much as possible, anyway!

I also drive a SUV now, which doesn't have a trunk. That's not a reason not to take my gun, but it is a reason not to go to Denver!
