I was just entering the freeway near my house this weekend when a state highway patrol officer saw fit to pull me over. Having a newly issued concealed carry permit I followed the laws to the letter. Which means, my loaded concealed carry gun was locked in the glove box as required by law. Here's the wrinkle. I was on the way to a gun show and had about 10 other guns in my SUV. The question in Ohio is whether you can transport other guns while having a loaded CCW gun in your vehicle and I was about to find out.

I informed the officer that I had a loaded firearm locked in the glove box as required by law. I also told here that there were other unloaded guns in the car and that I was traveling to a gun show. I see another squad car pull up and I'm sure this is going to get ugly. I give the officer my keys so she can unlock the glove box and retrieve my registration and insurance card. She takes my gun, registration etc and goes back to her car while the other officer stands with his hand resting on his gun.

The officer comes back and places the gun, registration and insurance card back in the glove box and locks it up. She asks me what type of gun I was carrying (a kahr p40) as she had never seen one. I recommended it to her as a good back up weapon. She handed me a warning, thanked me for following the CCW laws and sent me on my way. Quite a way to start your day. Made a great topic of conversation at the gun show to boot.

You have to carry your CCW pistol in a locked container while driving???? What's the use of having a CCW then?

Man, and I thought California was bad about gun laws. Over here I wear my CCW while I'm driving.

Glad it didn't turn out bad. You handled it well.

The law says a gun has to be HOLSTERED, on your person and in plain sight or locked in a glove box or a lockable case in a motor vehicle. I prefer to carry in the glove box until they decide what plain sight is or until they revise the law. It makes no sense to have a concealed carry permit and then carry you gun in plain view or locked up while in a car. At least we finally got a CCW passed!

It's concealed carry, but you have to carry in plain view while you are in your car  .

Oh well like you said atleast you have a ccw.

Gotta Love TEXAS.

You people obviously haven't read the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.

It is all spelled out: concealed carry out of the car, plain sight in the car, ammo locked in a separate area from the gun, permits, fingerprinting, photographs, police interviews, trigger locks, welded flash suppessors, magazine capacity limits, the illegality of bayonet lugs, forward pistol grips...

... while in Michigan having a locked up pistol in a container in the passenger area of your car unload is considered illegal concealed carry.

It's impossible to try and "open carry" here once you get into a car.

......while in South Carolina your car is considered part of your "castle", and you can carry a weapon concealed in your car with no permit, regardless of state residence, and may conceal it on your person while going from your car to your "place of habitation".

And we all know what a hotbed of violent crime South Carolina is with such "loose" gun laws, right?..........

Mississippi is the same as SC. Wanna carry a gun in the car? No permit required. We's mighty unsophisticated 'round here, ah reckon.

Too bad Tennessee isn't the same way -- you need it more in Memphis than you do in the MS 'burbs. But that's what reciprocity is for.

My MN Carry permit has gotten me out of several traffic citations. It helps that I have a very clean driving record. Congrats it sounds like you handled this very well.

When I went through the ccw training I had a hard time figuring out how you could carry a gun in a car in a holster that is still in plain sight unless the officer has xray vision. If it holstered and that holster is on your left side then there is no real way the gun is plain view.

Unless you have a CCW permit.

I've been carrying IWB at 3:00 lately. Then, when driving, I just slide the holster over a little so it's at around 2:00. As long as the shirt isn't covering it, it's in plain view...I guess.

What a stupid law.

I'm from Ohio and got my CCW in April. I have a friend that is a Columbus Police Officer and he also thinks it's a stupid clause in the law. He suggested to just clip the holster to the seatbelt across your lap. Normally mine is locked in the glove box too, but when in particularly bad neighborhoods, I take my friends advise and clip it to the seatbelt "in plain sight".

Remember it also has to be "on your person" as well as " in plain sight." Clipped to the seatbelt may or may not satisfiy on your person, which is about as ambiguous as in plain sight.

I'm coming up on my third anniversarry of carrying and, funny, but I have yet to be pulled over. I used to get pulled over three or four times a year and I'd get maybe one ticket every year or every two years. Now that I have a permit, I find that I've slown down a bit. Nice side benefit, as I don't miss the tickets.

I was stopped for the first time whiling carrying about a week ago. I give the officer my drivers license and CCW license.
The policeman asks where my gun is and what am I carrying. I had my SP101 in my left front pocket. He tells me to keep my
hands out of my pockets while he goes back to his car. He gives me a ticket for doing 54 in a 45 which is $159.00! :(

Actually, SC has the highest violent crime rate in the nation. Doesn't have the highest homicide rate, though, that "honor" belongs to Louisiana.

I'm not saying that I support gun control, just so you don't assume. :)

This advice came to me from a veteran Columbus Policeman now Detective. If you can't take the word of those paid to enforce the law ???? He's my friend, and definitely NOT a rookie. I seriously doubt he is going to be giving me bad advice. Holstered on your lap in plain sight is "on your person". If you show "Intent to comply to the law" you're covered. If you just stay calm, keep your hands on the wheel, provide license/insurance/CCW declare your carrying, and if holstered and in plain sight, or locked up in the glovebox, you're good to go. Just what my cop friends are telling me, not arguing or flaming at all. He's had to arrest 1 CCW holder that kept his loaded gun in his briefcase, unlocked in the front seat, and he didn't declare his license on the officers approach. They asked for license registration. He opened the briefcase and they saw the gun. Like they usually do when surprised with a gun they, drug him out of the car, and cuffed him, and arrested him. He was yelling he had a license, AFTER they happened to see the gun. He didn't follow the law. Not smart.

I usually carry my Kahr PM9 IWB about 5-6PM behind me, and then I'll pull it out and put it in the front at about 11:00 or so for car carry. It doesn't stand out so obvious to pedestians at stop lights with the IWB up front, but if I'm on the road for awhile I clip it the the seatbelt right on top of my lap. JMHO
