Gun magazines in Canada

Legal? I have no idea. However I would suspect that the presence of a loaded magazine would prompt a much more intrusive inspection of both your person and vehicle than I would want to endure.

Sounds to me like a good way to get suspected of having sold a gun (illegally) in Canada. Why have loaded magazines in ones vehicle? Avoid the even the appearance of taking contraband across an international border.

It depends.

High capacity magazines are prohibited items, and would subject you to arrest and prosecution, regardless of whether you had a firearm with you or not, whether they're loaded or not. IIRC, the maximum size for a detachable rifle magazine is 5 rounds. Likewise, pistol mags for .25, .32, and .380 are also prohibited items.

And has already been stated, finding magazines in your vehicle would undoubtedly result in all of your items being torn apart and minutely inspected. Probably including some anatomical areas you'd just as soon not have that done to! :what::eek::uhoh:

Then don't drive to Casino Windsor. Trying to get from US to Canada or more importantly from Canada to the US with loaded magazines will most likely result in you getting your Jeep back from customs in boxes.

What he said.

Centerfire rifle & shotgun magazines that hold more than 5 rounds are illegal.
Handgun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are illegal.
.25 calibered & .32 calibered handgun magazines are illegal.

If Canadian Customs finds any firearm part, magazine or ammunitionin your vehicle; they will assume you are smuggling firearms/ammo/etc into Canada and will detain you & dissassemble your vehicle in order to look for contraband items

I know it is illegal/very hard to get permission to bring firearms across the border into Canada.

Hardly.

You declare that you have a gun. They examine it to determine if it is a legal firearm under Canadian law. They ask you to come inside and fill out some paperwork. You write them a check for $25 and they print you out a temporary registration certificate.

As long as you don't exceed the time limit on the form, you shouldn't have any problems.

Sure, it's a pain in the rear after a day of driving, but I wouldn't call it 'very hard'.

There is an exemption for rimfire. Then past few years I've taken up a 50 round drum mag and a few 25-rounders for my 10/22.

They also have an exemption for rimfires when it comes to barrel length.
