These figures CAN'T be true. Why EVRYBODY KNOWS that guns cause crime and the crime rate has been falling for the last ten years!!

14 + million guns hit the streets and no corresponding spike in crime. The anti's have screemed for years that more guns = more crime, blood in the streets, etc. Where's the beef?

Well you have to remember that guns scare the liberals into weting there panties. More so if they are an EBR.:D

A background check is a federal law but the states don't have to use the NICS system.

My wife and I contributed 15 guns to last year's total.

CHL lets you skip NICs in Iowa too.
42 guns last year and 14 so far for 2010. Almost got them all but keep finding just one more.

This past week, a local 67 year old man came home to face an armed robber - he shot the robber.

With all the private sales, CHL no-check sales, C&R sales, and multiple purchases, it could easily be that twice that number changed hands in one way or another during 2009. I say "changed hands" because many of these are used rather than new, including those in the 14 mil number quoted in the OP.

Unfortunately, I only contributed one measly purchase to that number in 2009. More pressing things to spend money on, I guess. I sure hope I can do better in 2010...

Bought a few sold a few

I wish there was a way find out how many of them were new gun owners. I had several conversations with people last year who were buying a gun for the first time in 20 years because they thought this might be their last chance. I also had conversations, mostly at Cabelas, with people who had NEVER owned a gun, who were buying more than one for the same reason.

I look at it this way.......

The NICS is a good measure of new gun purchases. I posted on this a while back (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=501441&highlight=NICS) and was reminded that a few states do not use the NICS system. CCW permit holders do not need NICS in some states and Curio Relic holders dont require NICS for each purchase...... SO this is a good BASE number. I find it absolutely comforting that the number seems so high! I believe that the more legal, law abiding gun owners there are, the better off we are. A very big wedge against crime & the ultimate check on Government (And a GIANT MIDDLE FINGER to the UN!):neener: So these numbers are the starting point and would need all of these factors counted in. Private party sales are existing guns so this is a good measure of NEW purchases.

I did my share also, Just two, but nice ones.

I wonder how many of that number are used guns? The gun shops I frequent have a ton of new rifles/pistols on hand but when I am in there it seems like the ones that people are looking at and buying are mostly from the used section of the store. I'm sure they sell a lot of new ones also.

How many of the used guns were trades on new ones?

It might be interesting to see the production numbers of the major manufacturers and importers just to see what the actual mix is.

Whatever, a lot of sales is a lot of interest in the sport and that ain't bad.

When the used is sold, it would still have a NICS check. So it would still result in 2 NICS checks for only one new gun. Of course barring CHL exemptions of course.

Not necessarily. Here in AZ we can sell FtF w/ no FFL. I sold my .45 & .38 FtF to finance a SIG & a Beretta and those did go through NICS/4473.

14 million. Well, at least we did our part to stimulate the economy. Instead of borrowing from the Chinese, or raising taxes, how about the fed start turning over some M14's to the CMP? ;)

Somewhere, there is a figure for the increase in actual gunowners but I havent' been able to find it again. Seems like it was three or four million though that may be way off. The same source indicated that some of the stats reflect multiple sales of the Same gun to different gun owners.
It does appear that the largest part of the increase in sales comes from existing gun owners buying more and more guns to add to their accumulation.

What happened in 2005 to cause the steady increase to the current level?

Pilot - My guess: (From Wikipedia)

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) (or Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act) was a subtitle of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law in the United States that included a prohibition on the sale to civilians of certain semi-automatic firearms, so called "assault weapons." There was no legal definition of "assault weapons" in the U.S. prior to the law's enactment. The ten-year ban was passed by Congress on September 13, 1994 and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton the same day. The ban only applied to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment.

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired September 13, 2004, as part of the law's sunset provision.

People wanted to get what was previously banned.
