Sure seems so. We had our firearms "Age of Enlightenment" in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Advances were geometric and progress was made every day.

Now, we are smack in the middle of the "Dark Ages." We are subjected to the rules of the ignorant. We comply reluctantly and the persecution intensifies. Edicts and laws are enacted against all common sense and held up as examples. Further suppression of truth is the highest form of the art. Draconian punishments await all who dare to differ. The inquisitors operate with the full cooperation of the ruling classes.

How long, I wonder, until we regress even further and end up with primitive homemade firearms and complete the reversal of all natural law?

Due to expanding urbanization, I see the USA becoming more like the UK.

Homemade weapons? You would be better off with traditional flintlock muzzle-loading firearms. The problem with cartridge arms is that one's stash of primers will eventually run out and you will not be able to buy anymore when the Brady Bunch have banned everything.

Most buckskinners can knap their own flints, cast their own ball, and make their own powder. That is self-sufficiency.

Made his own rifle barrles and all! Used old .50 barrles he found in a plane in a plane graveyard. Made everything himself. Knifes, tools and a Viking helmit. Own clothes, house,boat. All he needed was Powder and seeds for his garden.

In days gone by people had to be self-sufficient or die. Simple as that. As population increases people tend to gather into tighter and tighter groups. In the past this would have lead to a natural "thinning of the herd". Modern technology and infrastructure has short circuited that natural safeguard (and Darwinism in general).

People who would have died of abject stupidity or lack of skills now seem to rise to positions of power, control or influence in modern civilization.

Somewhere in the psyches of those in urban rat-races, survival becomes about limiting what those around you can do, rather than taking responsibility for insuring your own wellbeing.

Those of us who do dare stand up and use our brains (and tools like guns) are viewed as a threat by those that seek to be safe above all else.

This problem will continue to grow unless we expand the physical frontiers of mankind to give those who seek freedom and self-responsibly the chance to head into the new wilderness. The only 2 things that meet the frontier criterion would be space and the oceans. Both will become frontiers but only if we survive as a species long enough to reach them.

The other option is population reduction. We seem to be able to duck the natural biologic forces of change. It may come to large scale war/terrorism leading to the system breaking down and natural forces again taking hold.

I once heard speculation that the reason that we've never detected extraterrestrial life is that most sentient species don't make it past some crisis point in their development to become spacefarers.

The more I look around me, the more I give creditability to that theory.
