New Changes to Texas Gun Laws...

Signed up the entire family for $100/3yrs. Plus that helps us get our CMP qualifications as TSRA is affiliated with them. So sign up Texans, then buy an M1 Garand or two from CMP for the Children! (Your wife might buy "for the Children" part but mine has her doubts!) Dont forget a case or two of the Greek ball ammo to shoot in the Garands, kids shoot alot you know!

TSRA did a great job this last session and those DA's are pathetic! They lobbied against the 2005 law then ignored it. Legislature was not happy and unanimously passed the new law. Time will tell if the DA's will obey this one or not.

What didnt pass??

Target I believe he's referring to the bill that would force employers to allow employees to keep guns in thier car while on the employers property. Thankfully, that sad, ugly little bit of law was shot down by the fine folks in the Texas Legislature.

Yes, as a matter of fact, the city of Fort Worth is putting on a recruitment drive right now. It seems to be a pretty good department. I haven't been an LEO for about 25 years now, but what I have seen on those guys, they do a pretty good job......a lot better than Dallas. I think the city of Arlington is also looking for people. Both areas are really growing.

ok, shame on me, but I'm not in the TSRA...

In my defense, I have been wanting to join, and I have contacted them with a couple of questions... but I never got an answer.

I will pay for my son's membership also.

Does TSRA have any youth activities...or shooting classes...or anything for kids? (mine is 9 and has been shooting for a while). This is what I emailed TSRA about, but never got an answer.

But it doesn't go far enough! We need to pass a law that my employer can insure I don't have silly string, rotten eggs, junk food, clothing not appropriate to my workplace, or a spare tire in my car!

My employer's unabridged right to inspect my person and property especially for legal items is what makes this country great!

I don't think my friend would agree with you.
His employer doesn't allow guns in the employee's cars in the company parking lot.
This forces the employees to drive to and from work unarmed.

My friend was glad he ignored that company rule one night when he was involved in a shooting on the way home, driving through Dallas.

My company tried to ban guns on company property, parking lots, company vehicles and company housing.
We, the employees, told the company that many of us carry guns for protection on the way to work and we WILL have the guns in the parking lots and apartments.
The company said OK.

Sometimes you just have to speak up.

Dallas is hiring 200 officers this year and wants to hire 250 if they can find the qualified candidates AND fit that many into their Academy schedule. Of course one reason they need to hire so many is because they pay the least of any area department; but have more of the nastier problems.

TSRA has youth hunting programs and youth target shooting programs. In fact, the TSRA Sportsman generally features on its youth activities in every issue. However, how accessible those programs are may depend on where you live. Texas is a big place and the programs aren't always conveniently located for everyone.

I have many friends on Ft Worth PD and they seem to like it. It also seems to me that the Chief takes good care of his Officers.

Well, sorta...

It would prevent an employer from penalizing (i.e. FIRING) an employee who can legally carry a firearm for storing that firearm in his locked vehicle.

Employees would have had to notify their immediate supervisors in writing to gain the protection afforded by the law.

And the "employer's property" is the public parking lot. You know, the one that TX law says can't legally be placed off limits to CHL carriers. So instead of prosecuting their employees, they just fire them.

Bottom line is that a customer at my company can leave a firearm in his car and the company can't do a thing about it. But me, the guy they've background checked out the wazoo, the guy who's spent decades helping their profits, I have to remain unarmed while I drive through 3 counties to and from work because I have too much invested to switch jobs or risk getting fired at this point. And before anyone asks, they didn't have that policy when I started working there.

Furthermore, the bill wasn't "shot down", it was HEAVILY lobbied against by TX business associations and the House Calendars Committee sat on it until the very last minute--too late for a vote. It almost certainly would have passed had the committee allowed to to get to the floor in time for a vote.

Yes, it was extremely well played by those who didn't want to upset their heavy hitting donors. It's going to take a bunch of letters and prodding to let the next session know they can't get away with that again.

However, I'm not sure I like the idea of having to divulge that I have a gun in the car to ANYONE. I can see that coming back to haunt you in some companies. This is a "Right to Work" state and while they couldn't directly fire you for this (if the bill passed), they will find a way if they are dead set against you having a firearm.

Target1911, HKUSP45C was correct in identifying what I was referring to. HKUSP45C, while I strongly disagree with your stance on the issue I won't argue with you here. The intent of this thread was to recognize all the good that was done this year. I apologize for opening up this can of worms.

fwiw, I'm a life member of the TSRA and am very satisfied with what they do for us in this fine state.

Euclidean was being sarcastic.

HKUSP45C,

I can't even begin to understand why you think an employer should be able to tell an employee that he can't keep a firearm in his car.

kudos to TSRA

And to all the other fine Texans who helped us keep our rights. Gun owner ship is a God given right, not to be infringed upon. Support HR 1096 to protect the 2 nd for all Americans.

It's OK with me that my stance is incomprehensible to you. I shouldn't have interjected my feelings about the bill in my response to the question. This thread is not the place to argue the merits of that law.

We're supposed to be celebrating all the good stuff that happened.

Again, I'm sorry I opened my big mouth.

ETA: I too am a TSRA member, soon to be a TCDL member as well.

That parking lot law would also have shielded employers from any and all consequences of guns being on their parking lots.

I gotta move out of New Jersey

I gotta move out of New Jersey. I can't even buy a 63 year old m1 carbine because it has a EVIL bayonet lug on it.

pretty much every agency in Texas is. you'd have to challenge the TCLEOSE exam to be licensed to be a peace officer first before you could apply to most agencies, unless they have a policy of running all applicants through their academy (DPS, Austin PD, Dallas PD, Houston PD, etc)

i believe Dallas and Houston are offering signing bonuses. the smaller agencies are hiring everywhere in the State but want you to have your peace officer license already before they'll hire you or even process you.

i also think Dallas and Houston have an expedited process for out-of-state peace officer applicants, and a mini in-house academy (like 8 weeks or so) that you would do rather than the entire 20+ week academy...or in the case of Dallas, 32 weeks.
