Hey folks,
I'm a young journalist (still doing some writing, mostly photos these days) and I'm a gun owner. Sometimes it doesn't seem like the two go together, sometimes it does, but I occasionally get a view of journalist idiocracy when it comes to weapons....
I remember going out and covering the beginning of dove hunting season and one of the hunters commented that I was a rare sight, a pro-gun journalist. I dunno, I don't really think of myself as a gun advocate, I've just grown up exposed to the concept of responsible gun use for sport, sustinence, defense....
In ya'll's (is that a word? good enough) experience, what can I do to help my fellow journalists with the world of gun owners and to help my fellow gun owners with the world of journalists?

Thanks,
John

Off the record...

and by the way, unless I specifically ask you and we specifically, happily, mutually agree (I could probably do a column on the subject if folks want)... don't worry, this is all totally off the record and you can quote me on that :) (I try to be a good journalist)

Take them to the range to go shooting and to meet ordinary people in the shooting sports. And if you really want to be a bit sneaky about it, coordinate your trip to the range so that you and your journalist friend just happen to bump into a charming lady friend of yours, who might recount a story about how she dropped off her kids at soccer practice and came out to the range...

A lightbulb will go off over your friend's head.

"Oh wow! A soccer mom who is a shooter! I should do a story about this!" he will think.
;)

First of all, welcome to the High Road! As always, new guy buys the ammo; I'll take .30-06 with a side of .45 ACP, thank you.;)

It seems to me that the best way to help out would be to simply get your colleagues out shooting. You are in a situation where you are dealing with these people daily. Invite them to go shooting with you. Offer to pay for their range fee and ammo, even. (Psst! Hey kid, the first one's free! ) Many of the people in journalism today hold the beliefs they do simply because they haven't been exposed to firearms and the safe use thereof. Each one, teach one!
