You can use many different materials. The goal is to scatter the light so that it gets through the material, but doesn't reflect harshly off of your guns.
Thin material such as bed sheeting works just fine.
I made a light box using 1/2" PVC with T and street elbow connectors. I taped some colored posterboard to the back and draped a cheap white bedsheet over it.
Here's the plans I used with a little modification:
I built the light box that SharpByCoop has posted all over. It's white posterboard with a white garbage bag stretched over it. Then 1 1/4" PVC with 3 5" clamp-on lights from Home Depot and 75W Daylight bulbs.
