Gun range fatality

BS. That percentage of way of suicide is so low. What are you saying? That single shooters showing up at ranges without "gear" means something? Cause it doesn't.
Did you read what I wrote?
It means that as an individual I used to be able to go to commercial indoor ranges in Florida, and now those same places often won’t let me. Those businesses say, when I ask about the change of policy, it’s because people go there to do unfortunate things.
I’ve never seen this, but they must have.

Had a guy shot at our outdoor range a while back. Nobody saw it, but speculation was that he set his handgun on the bench and it fell off, discharged up at him.

I wonder what handgun that was, without all the redundant safety mechanisms nowadays.

While suicides at gun ranges are relatively rare, for the most part, 9 out of ten go there alone and 9 out of ten rent a gun, even if they own a gun of their own. Many take their life in the parking lot.

Maybe California will make yet another law. The Buddy System Law. One person needs to hold hands with a depressed person all the time near bridges, railways, highways, anyplace something potentially dangerous is operated.

Depression is a very common and very serious mental health issue. Many times when it leads to suicide, those around the victim have witnessed things that should have raised concerns, but were ignored for one reason or another. Making jokes/derogatory comments about it is not the High Road. This is a tragic event that maybe could have been avoided, if someone would have paid attention and shown compassion/empathy.

Yeah, I live in a deep red area and a couple of the indoor ranges I know of/have gone to have a no solo rental policy. If they allow it it's because the guy or girl coming in has existing proof of firearms ownership (concealed carried, brought there own guns before, etc).

They probably haven't released much info because they don't know yet. My guess is they are trying to figure out if the shot came from his firearm or someone else's. Then try to work out what happened.

As far as the suicides and rental guns. It's happened here at a range. I 100% get why ranges would take steps to reduce the odds of it happening. The people saying it's no big deal and they shouldn't change rules for it. I don't think you are really looking at it from the business and employees point of view. Personally if I owned a range and that happened a couple of times. My precautions weren't stopping it. Then the rentals would go away all together. Not only would it close you down for a bit. It could be a litigation nightmare. Civil suits, cost of insurance, ect. Ranges are in business to make money. If the cost and liability out paces the profits there is no point.

Accidental or suicidal, it is all part of life and death. It isn't anything I dwell on because all the laws and policies won't change anything but inconvenience me and my freedoms.

This might sound callous but I'm tired of everyone's concern for the minority rather than the majority. :scrutiny:

It happens, whether you want to admit it or not. Whether or not you think it is B.S. is irrelevant and immaterial to everyone other that yourself. Have a nice day. :)

I know of at least two indoor ranges I have frequented that have had suicides with rented guns. Both have implemented a rule of no rentals to solo new shooters. New solo shooters are fine if they bring their own gear, and rentals are fine for new shooters who bring a friend. I don’t blame them for a whole bunch of reasons: nobody wants to see that or clean it up, and nobody wants their business shut down for a day or more while it’s under investigation.
