Hello,

I was having a general talk with some of my friends and we some how got onto the discussion of firearm registration.

1). I was saying that your firearm is NOT registered into a database when purchased unless it was reported stolen etc. (was I correct? This is in Florida)

2).This kind of goes with #1 but, one of my friends said her brother was arrested on gun related charges because "all guns are in a database".
I thought that was absurd.(Any ideas?)

Sorry I'm just a bit confused..

Welllll.... technically, there's no database.

But there are 4473s. Every gunshop has them. Still.

So yeah, there's a "database", one which can be seen by the BATFE whenever they want to.

Yes and no. While there is no federal ownership registration, per se, there is always a way to track the gun to the person who bought new from an FFL. But it is not available at a mouseclick. BATFE has a record of all the legit guns made/brought in/to this country. But they would have to go from the manufacturer/importer then to the distributor(s), and then the dealer and get the 4473 from the dealer. If the gun was sold privately at any point, it would be nearly impossible to track.

Again, yes and no. If the gun was either in the country legally or siezed at any time, it's serial number is on the books with BATFE. But as I said, if it was privately transferred no way to track it, unless the buyers and sellers kept records.

Just because he was arrested on gun related charges does not mean he had a gun traced to him, et al. That scenario is highly unlikely.

Thank you!

Thanks for the information! I will choose my words moe carefully next time we have this talk.. :scrutiny:

I think with the 4473"s we are all screwed when they come to get them. Our guns not being nationally registered is just a matter of symatics.

They got our number.
