If the Federal Government was to be immediately stripped down to Constitutional powers only, would society fall apart...and where would gun owners stand after the initial shock?

I have thought long and hard about this scenario. Please give it some thought before flying off the handle with your response.

It seems to me that, that was what was originally intended. Now that I have flown off the handle...
I think there is a significant chance that we will see a major event within the next 5 years that will change the way people live.
I cannot predict what that might be, good or bad.
There is overwhelming distrust of our political system today. Many people feel powerless to change what is going on.
The feeling of powerlessness will incite many to act.
My opinion is that we need less government and more personal responsibility.
There needs to be less options for folks to take advantage of.
Less waste of our finances that people work so hard for and the government seems to feel it can spend on programs that provide no real worth.
There should be more concern for the survival our the United States of America than what other countries are doing.

I might say we'd have more money to buy cool things, but maybe our economy would be very different.
I can think of some things money is diverted for, and wonder why most everyone has to work in order to benefit few.
Zero tolerance rules, free lunches, unfair weaponry for the enforcer, priveledged information, some things I would be happy to do away with.

Strip down the .gov to basic constitutional powers...
On that diet, what would we miss?

Looking at the whole picture, yes, absolutely. Society would fall apart, because the vast majority of people in this country are hopelessly dependent on the system, and the only way to get them to think and act for themselves is to slowly ween them off. If you cut them off abruptly, it'd be just as effective as dropping them off a cliff. Many, many people would crash and burn, go bankrupt, commit suicide, go insane, become clinically depressed, hopeless.

I believe the NEW World Order will happen within five yrs.

Congressman Ron Paul's TV Gaffe
By Congressman Ron Paul - House of Representatives

http://educate-yourself.org/nwo/ronpaultruthfulness26apr02.shtml
The other day, I made a huge "gaffe" on national TV: I told the truth about the crimes of the U.S. government. As you can imagine, the ceiling fell in, and a couple of walls too. Congressman are supposed to support the government, I was told. Oh, it's okay to criticize around the edges, but there are certain subjects a member of the House of Representatives is not supposed to bring up. But I touched the real "third-rail" of American politics, and the sparks sure flew.

I was interviewed on C-SPAN's morning "Washington Journal," and I used the opportunity, as I do all such media appearances, to point out how many of our liberties have been stolen by the federal government. We must take them back. The Constitution, after all, has a very limited role for Washington, D.C.

If we stuck to the Constitution as written, we would have: no federal meddling in our schools; no Federal Reserve; no U.S. membership in the UN; no gun control; and no foreign aid. We would have no welfare for big corporations, or the "poor"; no American troops in 100 foreign countries; no Nafta, Gatt, or "fast-track"; no arrogant federal judges usurping states rights; no attacks on private property; and no income tax. We could get rid of most of the cabinet departments, most of the agencies, and most of the budget. The government would be small, frugal, and limited.

That phrase was meant to apply to the General Welfare, not all the rob Peter to pay Paul schemes of which the government is currently so fond. If it doesn't help everybody, it isn't providing for the General Welfare.

We would have to pass an amendment, immediately, to handle zombies.

OK, do you mean that federal taxation stops , no social programs (isn't the income tax in the Big C) ?

If rich states no longer have to send loads of tax money to the Feds, then their legislatures will decide if they want to continue social programs on their own resources.

Poor states and their poor people may be in trouble if they get more money back from the Feds than they send in.

I don't think society will fall, and if this is a SHTF thread implying that the gun owner will have to fight against the mobs of outraged folks off the Federal dole - not going to happen.

BTW, 50% of the country (estimates vary) own a gun of some sort. But are they 'gun owners' who will band together to stop evil?

...But what of that general catch-all phrase oft referred to by liberals: ......."Provide for the General Welfare"?

I myself was fooled once by government taking care of you. Before I thought it would be nice if everything is provided to you by your government. I was a former navy and I worked with this guy who's Russian and I always ask how was their government before the fall of the Soviet Union. He told me that they have free education, medical, housing. Of course all controlled by the government. And I thought to myself that well that's kinda nice cause everything is free.

Then, I think about it here how the government is almost doing the same thing. And I said to myself, is this leading to communism or socialism? I was once for a big government but now I realized the dangers of it.

A SUMMARY OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

The TEN COMMANDMENTS represent GOD’S GOVERNMENT OVER MAN! GOD
commands us for our own good to give up wrongs and not rights! HIS system always results in LIBERTY and FREEDOM! The Constitution and the Bill of Rights are built on this foundation, which provides for punitive justice. It is not until one damages another persons property that he can be punished. The Marxist system leads to bondage and GOD’S system leads to LIBERTY!

Read very carefully:

1. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath to keep it Holy.
5. Honor thy father and thy mother.
6. Thou shalt not murder.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness.
10. Thou shalt not covet.

Directly above the Chief Justice’s chair is a tablet signifying theTEN COMMANDMENTS. When the Speaker of the House in the U.S. Congress looks up, his eyes look into the face of Moses. “The Bible is the Book upon which this Republic rests.” Andrew Jackson, Seventh President of the United States “The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts of the Bible.” Noah Webster

A SUMMARY OF THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO

The Communist Manifesto represents a misguided philosophy, which teaches the citizens to give up their RIGHTS for the sake of the “common good,” but it always ends in a police state. This is called preventive justice.

Control is the key concept. Read carefully:

1. Abolition of private property.
2. Heavy progressive income tax.
3. Abolition of all rights on inheritance.
4. Confiscation of property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Central bank.
6. Government control of Communications & Transportation.
7. Government ownership of factories and agriculture.
8. Government control of labor.
9. Corporate farms, regional planning.
10. Government control of education.

GIVE UP RIGHTS FOR THE “COMMON GOOD”?

Where people fear the government you have tyranny; where the government fears the people, you have liberty.

Poor states and their poor people may be in trouble if they get more money back from the Feds than they send in.
I was thinking the same thing ... it could cause a migration of poor folks from the South to the North ... and maybe that's what much of this unconstitutional federal power is intended to prevent in the first place.

Yes. If the only law is an over-simplified code open to wide and varying interpretations, there is essentially no law. Law is a social contract, and codes and statutes and constitutions are the expressions of the that contract. This is why the argument that we are a so-called Judeo-Christian culture with certain so-called Judeo-Christian values is actually a valuable argument, and neither a violation of the establishment clause nor mere sentimentality.

The constitutions expresses the most basic form of the ideas. Obviously every right is infringed to some degree. Obviously no one meant that I have the right to bear my arms in your bedroom, for example.

No, no society may exist with its only law one short document listing a few simple concepts and structures.
