Gun-related Projects and Hacks for Quarantine

Fitting grips. Its well within the grasp of a normal person, if they have the 20 hours to learn. Not related really, but you reminded me with "hack", if you ever see an SKS shortstroke, and there are a lot that do, a paperclip is the right size to fit in the gap between the gas port, and gas tube. Works great on rifles that have been rusted out from corrosive ammunition. Also, all 1911 people should read, research, and understand all of the legendary 1911Tuner posts. Maybe then all those people that make excuses at the range can actually shoot at the range.

Dillon 550 has a floating guide wheel that can slide and get caught under the primer feed tube mount. Took a small piece of 1/4 air line and slid over the shaft to prevent wheel from going too far.

hps1,

years ago I was editor of my club monthly and one month did an article about "the elasto-metric #2 target training device" you have described. you may find some improvement in accuracy if you wrap sufficient tape around the pencil shaft an inch above the erasure and one inch down the bore with the pencil seated until there is no play in the pencil point.

the technique was taught me by a former USAMU shooter and I seem to recall was in one of their pubs.

we did it in high school. biggest issue was guys shooting pencils at the ceiling tiles and each other.

we also "shot from the box" with the Remington 513T and M1 Garand rifle. empty rifle sand bagged into a box....shooter sighted at blank paper at five yards. Target man moved bullseye with hole in the middle around white paper at command of shooter until sight picture was correct and shooter commanded "Mark" when target man would mark paper through hole in center of target.

I used these techniques in service to turn Bolos into Marksmen and Marksmen into Sharpshooters

I think the pencil exercise has been around a long time. Never saw a publication on it, but was on a post AMU (rifle shooter) in early 60's and one of our team members, who had been on the pistol AMU previously, indoctrinated us. :) We found it entertaining during down time and was a good trigger control drill for rifle shooters as well.

Have also used the aiming circle w/rifle supported on boxes as you describe above in marksmanship classes to teach proper sight alignment.

Darn it! I could have sworn someone in this thread wrote they were trying to develop a mag well for the Ruger PCC that took CZ75 mags and I was going to ask him to make TWO!

hps1,

another "pistol drill" we did in high school was to hold an entrenching tool in an approved one handed bulls eye position with the shaft angled forward until the shakes started, rest and do it again shooting for thirty seconds of no shake.

my least favorite was the rifle drill we did for homework, watch your favorite sit com from the kneeling position complete with broom stick for rifle.

I do not think some folks took my "Expert required religious conversion....." comment seriously.

Just got my own kit today. Shenandoah kit from Traditions. Giving myself a crash course in black powder. My 1911 is in final stages so I have my next project already.

Just be careful!
It starts by building a kit. Next you will want to build one from a parts set. Then you will want to build one from a plank of wood and some parts, and before long you will want to see if you can build something that nobody else knows how to build!

I finished a 9mm AR pistol build recently that I had started many months ago, and had left sitting unfinished forever...
Calling it the "Plague Pistol" due to the timing of it's completion...

I've also been toying with the idea of learning long range shooting skills. As a normal grunt (NOT a sniper) all of my combat experience was in Iraq, not Afghanistan, so it was close range stuff. Same with hunting in the Indiana woods... Deer, and squirrel aren't more that 40 to 70 yds away most times, (sometime 15 yds) so the idea of being accurate at like 600 yds with a bolt gun is a new thing to me. I started watching a series on youtube called "Sniper 101" by Tiborasaurus Rex, and the guy goes into detail about a lot of the variables involved with setting up good ballistic tables for your rifle. Ordered up a Magpul Hunter stock for my .243 Remington 700 to get me started.

I posted a thread about my project here, but...

My labor of love during my extra time at home has been doing customized case inserts for all of my rifles. I also have plans for a pistol case but haven't gotten around to it yet, that one will be a bit more involved, as well as a case for my spotting scope, tripod, and digiscoping adapter. Just tripod in Saturday so hopefully that one I'll knock out this week.

I use kaizen foam for all of the cases shorter than 48" long (the longest the sheets come in) and I used Case Club foam for the one 52" case. I use a drywall cutting tool, snap off utility knives, or an electric carving knife just depending on what kind of cut I need. Also have a long nosed marker which really helps for tracing. The bottom picture is a 3D blueprint for the pistol case insert I'm planning.

If someone does that, you can count me in for a PCC and the CZ magwell. I really want a 9mm AR pistol or 9mm Carbine, but would really rather not have to buy more mags.
