I'm going down to Ft. Sam for a dedication of a building (Sebban Hall, if any of you guys work on Sam) on Friday, and I think I'll have some free time. I'll be there from Thursday night until Saturday morning.

Can anyone recommend some gun related stuff to do? Any ranges (with rentals) you highly recommend, or ones I should avoid? Any museums with a large collection of guns?

Gun stores to browse - you can google for directions.

Dury's (a favorite)
Nagel's - expensive
Bass Pro - they have an indoor range, no rentals

If you have time to drive 60 miles - Cabela's up I-35.

Ranges - if you bring guns.

Blackhawk
Bullet Hole
Cedar Ridge
Bracken

Look out for the inferno for outdoor ranges.

If you were here over the weekend, there are a few matches.

The Bullet Hole range rents all kinds of handguns as well as some assault rifles and full auto toys.

Nagel's gun shop is great for killing an afternoon browsing, it's huge. Prices are high there, though.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. How much should I expect to pay to rent guns down there? We don't have any ranges like that up here. Never rented a gun before.

Not about guns, but if you can, go eat a steak at Bohannons down by the Riverwalk.

I find it slightly ironic that I'm leaving Iowa, and being recommended a restaurant in Texas that serves Midwestern corn fed beef! :neener: Prime beef is hard to find up here though. What are prices like there? 50 bucks for a good meal is fine with me, 200 is not. Not by myself at least.

Just north of SA, in New Braunfels, you'll find Dietz's range. It's a decent outdoor range. They have a nice clay shooting setup, if that's your thing. Also, they have more than 100 yds to shoot on. I don't recall exactly, but I think the range goes out to at least 250 yds. Last time I went you could shoot FMJ, also.

Or bring along yer muzzleloader and re-enact the Alamo...

I recommend Hungry Farmer on Military Drive and 35 South. Good food and low price.
Next would be the Barn Door off Broadway and Loop 410. Little more expensive, but dang, those steaks are big.
Neither one will cost you $50 to eat though. That'll be the amount to feed a family, not just one person.

Most rentals, IIRC, are in the $10-25 range, and they'll likely want you to buy their own ammo for it, too. I was at Lone Star in Lockhart on Saturday, and they had $10 rentals, and probably 75 different guns to rent. The Bullet Hole on the West Side was, I THINK, $15 or $20 for rentals a year ago or so, but they also rent some full auto stuff where you pay by the mag.

The nice thing about the rental is that you don't have to clean it!

Enjoy the South Texas heat while you're here.

Just got back from there on vacation.Hit the Riverwalk. It
is quite scenic.Don't forget the Tower of Americas 4D Theater.
Nice walk from the Riverwalk areas.Go there at night.
Gun related?Well it's too bad you won't have one with you.
Some places I found the wife and I in were a little off base.
Felt comfortable I was packing. We were approached several
times from guys wanting a hand out.No biggie.Just shrug em off.
Or donate.Whichever you prefer.Guns?I saw some
Pawn shops around, didn't visit them due to the wife and all.
Pawn shops are interesting to me.San Antonio is a nice place
to visit.Go to the Alamo.Just to say you did. It's hard to picture
a war took place there with all the Buildings and traffic around
the place.Lots of things to do in San Antonio.Just put on the walking
shoes,open your eyes,look around,and enjoy.B/H

Food - if you are in TX - you should go for Tex-Mex or BBQ.

Lots of places!

Opinions will of course differ but I like Picante Grill on Broadway. The best BBQ is out of town, for a road trip. But there are some in town. Might look at yelp.com for ideas.

But if you do go to Lockhart - if you had time - that's the BBQ shrine of the state - http://www.lockhart-tx.org/web98/visitors/bbqcapitaloftexas.asp
