Pew First: Gun rights top gun control in major public opinion shift

According to a recent Pew poll, 63% of Americans now believe that having a gun is the best way to protect against crime versus 30%.

"We are at a moment when most Americans believe crime rates are rising and when most believe gun ownership – not gun control – makes people safer," said the survey.

I saw that poll yesterday and must say, it suprised me. I would have thought the opposite to be true but that's likely because of the media distorting facts and only covering stories they like.

Hopefully I'm wrong and the poll is right, who knows this day and age.
Pew polls are fairly credible, compared to many other and government numbers.

My thoughts exactly. The stream of major media outlets' effluent reflects metropolitan liberalism.

Until they are told what universal background checks really mean.

Exactly. Most people see back ground check. But when you look at what most bills/initiatives propose, it is usually way more than a back ground check, it's registration. Most people won't take the time to read their credit card statement, so a candidates voting record or a 15 page initiative is just way too long for their attention span.

Lets see, what channel was that game on?

It's been pretty clear from past research that the majority of the country gun favors gun ownership by law abiding citizens. It is also clear that a major of favors measures that prevent criminals from getting guns.

That's how you get a poll saying we want gun rights and background checks. It is consistent. Law abiding folks want guns and criminals not to have them.

You can argue about UBCs in the choir, but those outside of it see them as reasonable as long as they don't infringe on regular folks getting guns.

That's what more techy survey folks have found.
