I just purchased a CZ P-01 and now I'm looking for a decent safe in the $50-75 range (up to $100 if it's really nice but I have a budget). Locally there's a Lowes, Walmart, and Sears, but I may decide to purchase online if the shipping costs aren't too much.

Any recommendations?

The other guys can give good advice, but whatever you get, be sure to bolt it down. Otherwise a thief can just pick it up and carry it off.

Are you talking a fireproof safe with a combo (start somewhere around 250-300 for a 8-10 long-gun) or a steel box with a door and a key (stack on has them for about 100 for the 8 long-gun)? A safe will keep me out for a few hours, the steel "safes" by stack on will keep me out for about 20 minutes, even if it is bolted to the floor. If you aren't worried too much about fireproof and to use it as a deterrent to a thief of opportunity, stack-on is the place to look. Wally world is the most likely place to find one. I have seen combo one or two handgun safes for about 100 dollars, but I don't have any experience in them.

If you need quick access, I recommend you try to stretch your budget to get the basic model Gun Vault.

These people have it on sale for $79:

(Notice they're not available until November, though.)

I'm not familiar with this merchant, but I've had a Deluxe Mini Gunvault for years, and I'm very happy with it. The difference between the basic and deluxe is not a big deal.

If you don't need quick access, you can save a bit and get a "slow-opening" safe. Some people just unlock their safe when they're at home, or when they go to bed, and only lock it when they won't be present to control access to the weapon. When it needs to be locked will vary with your situation: if you don't have kids or room mates you may only need to lock it when you're not home. In that case, the quick-access feature of the Gunvault may not be necessary. You need to decide on your own level of security, and discipline yourself to maintain that level.

And of course, bolt it down!

I wouldn't bet on finding a good safe for $50-$75. But locking the gun up in something is better than locking it up in nothing.

For only one handgun, Cabela's sells the "Secure It Handgun Safe" for $29.99. It can serve double duty as a home or car security box.

I have two gunvaults (gunvault.com). One recently broke, I called them up and sent me an exchange no questions asked. They are under $100, CA DOJ approved and work great.

Any safe you find for that price will be good only for stopping children and the laziest of criminals. Just keep that in mind, it's better than nothing, but not by much.

Since you only have one handgun there are many decent lockboxes that sell for under $100. American Security sells a one gun box that uses the Simplex mechanical push button lock. If you buy something with a digital lock make sure it can be also opened with a key since the low priced digital locks are more likely to fail. Also make sure it comes with holes in the bottom so you can bolt it to a dresser or night stand.

A Brinks or Sentry style document safe, bolted to the floor. They are about $30. Just unlock it when you go to bed and lock it when you leave. Keep the key on your car key chain so you can remember.

I decided to purchase a Secure It Handgun Storage Safe from Amazon. It's only $30 and will tie me over until I invest in a more secure (and larger capacity) safe later on. It'll also come in handy for when I travel with my gun.

MAKster: The one I linked to is made by American Security. S&W uses AmSec for their safes. I'm still considering the AmSec PB2. It can be had from lapolicegear.com for $80.

might try an auction. i saw a antique safe go for 45 dollars while back at an auction in kanas. if i had not been riding my bike i would own that safe. the iron was worth more than the 45 dollars.

+1 on the auction safes, just make sure that you get the combo or it will cost you to get a locksmith to re-combo it. I have picked up 3 safes from auctions and one of them is about 4ft by 4ft square (not big enough for a long gun but plenty big enough for various pistols). If I can remember right I paid about $20 for it at an auction.

Another place to look is estate sales, they tend to be cheap b/c the people holding the sale generally don't want to have to move a big safe.
