First, anyone use rifle rods and if so do you still use gun socks?

Second, would it be safe to store magazines on a magnet strip ?

Inside a gunsafe, I would not use gunsocks - part of the task is meant to be maintaining a consistent, gun-friendly environment inside the safe, but that consistency requires air mobility within the safe. Gunsocks will prevent that airflow.

Magnetic strip would be safe enough, although the repeated rubbing may eventually magnetize the mags, which would mean they'd be prone to pick up ferrous particulates from soil, which could mean otherwise unwarranted failures. So I'd personally pass on that idea.

Thanks for the replys
I did have the same concern with the magnet

all my handguns are in soft pistol cases in my safes. Never had a problem.
Me either, but I take great care to put them away dry and oiled/greased. Rifles are not covered.

That said, in general it's risky to store them in a sock or case which would hold any moisture that got in. I started out that way before I knew better, and.........but I never recommend it, too many stories of rusted guns.

My safe was full last year so I switched to rifle rods. It gave me another 40% of space and I'm happy with the system, no more removing 5 guns to get to the 6th in the back! At most I only have to remove 2 to get to the back row now.

I don't use gun socks.

Now, using the smaller rare-earth magnets to hold mag pouches would help isolate the mags from the magnets. (And would help where a person had no-ferrous, or polymer mags.)

I want some more feedback on rifle rods. I got a 64gun safe and got about 32ish long guns in it. Maybe if I pulled the bolts I'd get more. Yea it's going to suck to move around to get one out in the back. I also have the problem with a few guns having 29" barrels

Always had socks on all my rifles in the safe. Safes were inside house and in unheated garage. Never a problem. However, those safes in the garage did not have the interior exposed to frequent and severe temp changes. Guns were wiped down thoroughly with a silicone impregnated cloth or one sprayed with rem oil before being put away.

I keep my all my guns clean and oiled in my safes. I check them often and I never have any issues. If they're clean and oiled I see no reason to put a sock over them.

^^^when the safe is chock full it’s more to prevent knicks in wood, scratches on metal etc from handling them while taking long guns out and putting them back in close quarters.

I wouldn't use magnets on anything firearms related.

Using magnets means magnetizing metals, however slightly that may be. And even slightly magnetized metals will act to pick up any debris even remotely magnetic in return. You don't need to encourage that.

Same here, safe is for guns. Some pistols are in a case and have more than one mag, like the S&W M-41 I shot some steel challenge matches with.

If I did the pistol games I’d probably have similar with a suitable pistol, but for the most part extra mags are AR mags, in a couple of boxes on the shelf.

Match rifle mags are generally one in the gun and extras in the packs I take to the matches.
