Friend sent me this link, did a search and didn't see it posted before.

Looks to be a firearm safety class in Indiana, 1956, Life Magazine pictorial. Looks like a conservation officer in the school and a field trip to boot!

Here is one:

When I was in high school in the mid to late 60's, our local YMCA held .22 rifle shooting classes indoors, with bullet traps. Taught by our bus driver. I'll never forget the brother and sister team that shot. They were kind of the nerds in school -and the best shots of everyone!

A friend of mine who used to teach in alaska was talking with me one day how they have rifle training in school and they have a triathlon type shooting sport. And that wasn't that long ago.

Some still do. I teach gun safety as part of Outdoor Ed. Girls too! We take trips to the range.
BTW, I was born in Libby.

The town in the pictures is Griffith, Indiana from what I saw on the School Bus. Griffith is in Northwest Indiana just South of Gary. I remember my Dad taking me and my younger brother shooting in some woods a few miles north of there with his Marlin 39A back in the mid to late 50's.
