Here in Kansas, it is legal for an individual to buy a gun from another individual without any documentation. I have done this a few times over the years, mostly with people I knew, and I have sold/traded some of those guns, without really thinking too much about it. Now I am considering selling a gun I bought at a gun show on just this basis, and I am having second thoughts, due to not knowing the history of the gun or the seller, and having no way to prove who I bought the gun from, where, when etc.

Am I worrying too much?

Thanks!

Anytime I've sold a gun privately, I've written up a quick receipt for both me and the buyer. On it, I put our information: name, address, etc.

The government doesn't get a copy, but I have a record of the sale if anything goes wrong.

A friend of mine does the same thing. A few years ago, he had the police show up at his door, asking about a gun he'd bought years prior. Apparently it had been used in a crime.

He showed the officers the receipt, and that was it.

In Connecticut, you have to fill out three sale forms for any handgun...sned one to the state, another to the police department in the town that you live and you have to keep one copy. No paperwork is required for a long gun, but to save your own butt it is definitely smart to fill out a bill of sale with the buyer's contact info in case of any problems.

Yes. If your state was overly concerned about private gun sales they'd change the law. Just follow state law. Write up a bill of sale and both of you sign it if it makes you feel better.

first 2 transactions, i did a bill of sale. after that, i didnt do anything.

didnt feel right asking for their personal information.

I ask for a bill of sale. On that only states their name, my name, the gun's make model and serial number, and the date. I prefer private sales because I don't have to fill out that silly 4473 or have a call into the government telling them I'm buying a gun.

I keep an Excel spreadsheet with make, model and serial numbers of all my guns, stereo equipment and other electronics etc.
When it comes to the guns I make a notation to the side listing where I got it, date and price paid. If it was a private sale I include the sellers name, address and phone number. Same for guns I've sold or traded; they don't get deleted from the list, they get noted "Sold", "Traded" or what ever along with the date and info on the person who received it.
