I got the cabelas shooting catalog in the mail today. Usually that catatlog sticks around for weeks or months...but today it was in the trash within 5 minutes.

As i looked through the pages i realized that they dont have any of the stuff i want. They are advertising it...but its not available. I dont think ive ordered anything from a gun company in 6 months.

I probably wont order anything until ammo/reloading supplies are back close to normal. I have plenty of ammo and a good inventory of reloading supplies...but im in no mood to consume them with no way to resupply.

I usually spend around 2k a year on gun "stuff" but i doubt ill spend a quarter of that this year if the supply issues continue. Anyone else see a decline in their shooting related purchases?

If only you could convince all the "clowns" still trying to buy any/everything gun related to sit on their wallet, like you. Last thing I bought was 10/31/12, and I haven't been tempted since. At the current rate, it will be end of next year before things might get normal.

the websites get it in but the shipping starts to hurt after a bit when you cant get everything you want in one shot.

The only catalogs I tend to keep are the 5.11 type. If interested in a particular weapon, I use my legs and go to a LGS and check it out. ALL bulk mail is immediately disposed of upon entering our house.

Really don't have much use for print catalogues. Or print media either.

I either hear about shooting related tools and tech here, or elsewhere online, or I see it used in a match month-to-month. I can't remember the last time I saw something in a magazine or catalog that wasn't so "old news" by then that it was of no interest.

Print catalog's and flyers go from the mail box straight to the trash. I see no need for them today. Going online is easy and much more likely to be up to date. Well they do serve one purpose, they help keep USPS afloat.

I get most all of my gun related flyers via e-mail. I just got a sale flyer for the local LGS with a decent sale that starts this weekend. I'll probably go and check it out. I prefer the electronic mailings because they seem to have up to date pricing and availability where the print ads don't.

I also saw that the other LGS in town has 7.62x39 for $299/1000 and 7.62x54r for $99/440 rounds. The supply in my area seems to be getting much better with prices returning to around normal on some more popular items.

I've been buying surplus and modern rifles and handguns and ammo this whole time. Sometimes a few dollars more than prepanic but nothing outrageous.

When I see "check our website for availability" on the features items I chuck the magazine. It means not in stock. I know they print these ahead of time but it's been long enough to know what should not be "featured" due to availability. Featured does not mean in-stock. It's a bait-and-switch.

It used to be good bathroom reading material.

I suppose I just enjoy looking at paper pages now and then...pages that do not light up. Even those crazy CTD flyers provide free entertainment. I still subscribe to a few 'physical' magazines as well (various subjects). I even walk a block to the physical library building and check out (GASP!) physical books.
Sure, I keep a couple thousand plus good books on my Kindle and Kindle Fire...it's convenient. The net is convenient also.......
But, after staring at 2 screens all day in my engineering job, sometimes I just want to read stuff on a paper page to relax.
.

Their, "go to website or call for pricing and availability" statement under the ammo and reloading components in the new shooting catalog turns me off.
Cabela's have been fair in their pricing in the past, but this smacks of the same practice CTD was using. Price being based on demand and availability.
I hope Cabela's isn't headed down that road, if so I am done with them.

How can you expect Cabelas to price something when they get an order in from a distributor for 'x' price and it sells out within potentially hours and have to wait for the next shipment at potentially a new 'x' price?

I collect some historical catalogs. Interesting area.

I have bought 3 firearms in the last year for the grandsons. Cabela's Saturday specials on two different occasions I was at the gun counter 2 minutes after opening of the store and they were out.

Went to Walmart and they sold me 3 firearms and delivered them to me in about 3 days at a lower price.

I have $500 on my Cabelas card and cannot find anything in the store that I want at a price that is competitive.

I don't use catalogs either. I've thought about getting subscriptions to magazines too but I think it's pointless because I can go online and get the same info faster and for free.

@dampoo: ya got that right. It sucks to be chained to a gift card. I will not shop at a couple of stores because of their retail practices, but if I had a gift card, I might try to sell it to friend.

Btw: Most of my favorite pawn shops have retail store gift cards for sale (and a paper receipt showing their actual balance).

In the 90s I “devoured” Shotgun News. Recently I received a subscription offer for a half year at about half the annual rate. So I signed up thinking it would be like old times…NOT!

It’s almost all advertising and very, very few private firearm sales. There was a “money back” guarantee and after just 2 issues I’m going to make the request. I’m betting that there’s a catch that the refund will be less the “regular” price of the issues I received. Anyone have that experience?
