This type of thing happens to me all the time, though on a smaller scale. Funny thing is though I go out of my way to correct a mistake in my favor and usually ignore mistakes in the store's favor (small ones). It just ain't worth the potential argument to argue a 50 cents mistake, I'd rather just pay it.

Funny thing though, when I do argue they always call for a price check. When I argue that I should pay more they just ask me how much it should be and charge me that amount.

This is THE Highroad.....
Call them, pay for it

To those who voted No :cuss:
I am sure Art's Grammaw would switch you good and long for not paying.... If she found out.

Enjoy the free pistol, for about a week, then call the shop.

Charges "disappear" for a few days on my card. I check my balance right after leaving the store, and the charge is there. A day or two later, its gone, and stays gone for a few days before it returns. So I wait a week before I make the call so I dont get double-charged for my honesty, again...

I can think of a couple reasons that have nothing to do with stealing for the 9 no votes.

First off when I read it, the syntax lead me to believe the choice was between calling and letting them know or just going in in person.

Second there might be some monkey-wrenchers here that just like to screw around with poll results.

Well.......it looks to me like you are now in an excellent position to negotiate a lower price for that gun.

Just kidding! for real now - you call them on their mistake, and then pony up the dough.

I would tell them...but sometimes it just don't work. Case in point....A few years ago I qualified for an M1 Garand thru the CMP. I wanted a select grade, and they told me they would let me know when they had one ready. Two months later they call me and tell me they are ready to ship. They charge my card 750 FRN's, and I wait. Three days later, they call and tell me there was a screw up, and that it might be as long as another year for a select. I say fine, but you need to refund the payment until you are really ready to ship. They do so in about two days. Then a year later, with no phone call or letter, an M1 shows up at my door. I call them and tell them that I didn't pay for it, but they insisted that I did. I even explained in detail what happened, and tell them that I have a lot less to keep track of than they do, and that I really wanted to pay for this FINE rifle. They would have no part of it, insisting that it was already paid for. Bottom line....I got a free select grade M1 Garand. And a clear conscience.

There's no substitute for integrity

A few years ago a local store had a deal on papasan chairs with cushions. My wife wanted one for our bedroom alcove, so off we went and got one. When we got home we realized that they had charged us for the chair, but not the cushion, which was sold separately. We called them about it and went back later to pay for the cushion. We were pleased to hear that many other customers had also notified them of their error and made it right.

Integrity is precious. Compromising your integrity has a steep price tag. At the end of the day, I have to be okay with myself.

Another thing some folks don't realize is someone has to pay for the loss. When people steal or shoplift, retail outlets have to raise prices to cover the cost.

Religious or not, Christian or not, that little phrase "do unto others" is really a heck of a problem solver.

How about a poll "If you accidently gave someone a gun and didn't charge them for it, would you want them to tell you and pay you?--Yes/No?"

See how easy it is? :)

There is no question I would pay for it, but there is a question of how long I would wait before I did. A small store I trust I would drive or call as soon as I notice the mistake, not because I know them, but because they know me and if I got charged twice I know they would fix it. Some of these bigger chain stores I would wait a while to see if it got straigtened out first. I've been double charged way too many times just buying a product normaly to add aditional confusion. Imagine the laugh you would get at walmart explaining how you bought something and didn't get charged so you honestly came in the next day and paid, and the day after they charged you again.

Once I bought something at staples, when I was balancing my bills at the end of the month I noticed they carged me the wrong item, about $80 in thier favor, I went in and brought the item I had actually bought plus the reciept and they wouldn't fix it. They said since it was so long ago they couldn't prove what I actually bought verse what I paid for. I refuse to shop there any more except when I have to, but I have to say if they made a mistake in my favor in the future I would have a real hard time giving the money back.

I would never be dishonest, but I'm not gonna get screwed by my honesty.

A friend had this happen with Sears and a computer. After 3 phone calls and a letter telling them they accidently refunded his $1,800 and they need to fix the problem he figured he did more than his part and dropped the matter. Sears never did contact him. Sometimes stupid isn't fixable.

Depends on whether I bought it at Wal-Mart.

Moral and ethical concerns aside, they'd probably try to press charges if I told them, assuming I had stolen it and had a change of heart or something.

Yes I am cynical. No this has not actually happened.

My vote:

[X] Go back to the store and take care of the balance.

Last time I was in a simular situation, I was charged $150 for $250 dollars worth of magazines, I recieved two boxes of honesty ammo for free.

New bank teller once gave me $100 too much when I cashed a check, I smiled as I handed her back the extra bill and she just about had a heart attack. Guess who takes extra special care of me when I have any problems or questions at the bank?
