Gun shop recommendations in Portland Maine or south from there in ME

Looking for a great gun shop in the Portland, Maine area, or south from there. At the moment planning on visiting the Kittery Trading Post, but wondering if there is a smaller shop that will have a better deal for my girlfriend's first gun. She's looking for a smaller but heavier .357 DA revolver. New would be great, but with her budget we're probably looking for a 'used' one in 'like-new' condition. Gun shop recommendations would be greatly appreciated, feel free to add gun recommendations as well. She's NASTY with my GP-100, but it has a 6" bbl and she wants something smaller. She has pretty small hands, she can barely reach the trigger on a 1911 when holding it with a proper grip, but she is great with DA revolvers. She's looking for something on the small to medium side, preferably 6 rounds, .357, and with a hammer. I'm a big fan of S&W, and Rugers have never treated me bad either, probably going to stick to one of those manufacturers.
 
I have been to kittery trading post and you will not be disappointed. They have a very large selection. Living north of Portland I have hot been to any other shops but kittery. There is also a cabelas in that area that could be another option.
 
I like the Kittery Trading Post, Cabellas and LL Bean in Freeport, and Howells--just off the turnpike in Gray. Those are a few of the stores I go to and look over the toys when I want a new one. FWIW some of the bigger stores have the best prices on the popular new firearms as they go for volume and low markup.
 
I got a great deal on a Saiga from Northeastern Firearms in Turner a couple of years ago but lately Cabelas has been able to beat most internet pricing and all of the local smaller shops.

Also, dont rule out www.unclehenrys.com either as there are some great deals there.
 
No first hand experience but a friend speaks highly of Maine Tactical in Scarborough, ME. He and his girlfriend recently bought carry weapons there.
 
KTP is pretty decent. I picked up my LC9 there for $300 and I'm on the list for an SR1911 for a reasonable price. Too bad they do charge for shipping though. Sounds like you wont have that problem.

I happen to be a MA resident at the moment :mad:, with many non-res carry permits, but my girlfriend lives in Maine and is a Maine resident, so I'm not as familiar with stores in her area as I SHOULD be!!! -as far as the long-distance relationship goes, we are very awesome together and have been together for two years now, we spend much time together and stay at each other's places at least once a week. we will be obeying any and all laws with her and her gun that we plan to purchase soon, but it's about time she has one of her own! :) I can't wait to get out of Crazychusetts :barf: (I was born here, not my fault!) and move up to Maine, I have many friends up there and they all agree I belong there. It is such a heavenly place to be!!! -

Anyhoo! getting back on track, I made a list of all the places mentioned so far, TinPig, I am a huge fan of Four Seasons, and Carl has always treated me right with my many purchases there :) if we can get a good deal there, we'll have it shipped and transferred, but she has a bit of a budget, as do I, so we're looking to purchase locally.

Frog0207, thanks for the suggestions! I forgot about Howell's! I've been there on a few occasions, and I love that area of Maine and have a few friends there. When at Howell's I've bought some triple 7 powder for my percussion guns, a decent leather western rig out of their used leather bin, and I also bought some John Wayne ltd edition .45LC there as it was the only .45LC they had that day. They are a very friendly shop, and I look forward to my next visit. They didn't even treat me like a 'Mass-h*le,' probably because I'm really not one, and also perhaps due to the good guys I was with, but other people in Maine will sometimes never even give me a chance when they see my license plates. Thing is I can't really blame them based on what I see every day in this silly place (again I can't wait to get our of here!!!)

It's funny, at first I thought we'd find a better deal in a 'Mom & Pop' gunshop, but it makes perfect sense that the big stores sell at lower prices for volume sales... I'd rather give my money to a local owned business, but I do that often enough, and since we have a tight-budget and want the best bang for buck, we might just try the Kittery Post first, then try LL Bean's (LOVE their return policy!!! though I'm guessing it doesn't apply to firearms), and then if we need to we'll try Cabellas from there, saving the biggest chain for last option.

When I can, I still plan to visit Northeast firearms in Turner, thanks McDonl, Maine Tactical in Scarborough, thanks PVD, and Maine Military in Holden, thanks Denderwuz. I love the local places, and they all sound pretty cool!

For anyone else who stumbles upon this thread, I still welcome shop suggestions and gun suggestions. OP has the gun criteria that we are looking for :)
 
There are lots of small, friendly gun shops scattered around the state. If you are willing to travel a bit north of Portland, as previously mentioned, Howell's is a very nice shop. Another nearby favorite of mine is C+R in Brunswick, just over the town line from Freeport on Rt.1. Enjoy shopping.
 
I also recommend KTP. In Sanford there is also Pac N Arms, he has a very good selection and he's also a FFL SOT.

and FiveTwoSeven, Pac N Arms sounds great just by the name! I gotta ask, what does SOT mean?
We might have to make a weekend of driving all over and visiting all these shops! .... actually now that I think about it, maybe we'll do one or two a month, so i can actually buy something from each! :)

FIVETWOSEVEN has it right, Pac N Arms is hands down the best place. Best prices I ever see. It is a small shop but they do high volume. He is also a Class 3 dealer so he can do silencers, full-autos, etc. I go there at least twice a week, always good deals going on. I don't work there or anything but I can't say enough about them.
 
Google does have it on their maps, the map is correct where it is on Jack Lane in Sanford. This shop is next to his house, seemed low key to me when I first went there but he is very professional and most people I've encountered there are good friendly law abiding people.
He has been in business for 21 years I believe and I buy most of my guns/ammo from him. (His ammo prices even beat Walmart!) It can be addicting though, I find myself buying close to a gun a week from him because I find such good deals. :)

Special Occupation Taxpayer, if you become one then you can sell items like Silencers, short barreled "long" guns and even Machine guns. I haven't been to the shop yet myself but I met him at the gun show in Sanford and he had the entire back of the show to his business.
 
Phil, the owner of Pac N Arms, coordinates the Sanford gun show. He purposely takes the very back of the show to make sure he doesn't show favoritism to his own business. He pays for the same amount of space as every other vendor. Once you meet and get to know him you'll see he's a straight shooter.

Ditto, whenever my wife and I are in Maine on vacation we always stop there, great shop and well worth a trip.

I went to KTP almost 6 years ago while in Maine on vacation. Awesome place. Could spent hours in there. I still watch their used list from time to time.
 
KTP is great to see their big selection but their prices are much higher than Pac N Arms.
And while they have some of their used stuff online most of it isn't so it's worth going in person.
 
Good to know! I've been to the Kittery Post countless times and I love it, but Pac n Arms sounds awesome and I haven't been there yet, sounds like it'll be our first stop!
