Yes, the rumors are true. I am escaping California and will be in Tucson, AZ around Christmas.

Can anyone point me to good gun shoppes in the area?

Anything else I need to know about Arizona?

I will be so tactical, California will WANT to break off and fall into the ocean. Just to be on the safe side.

Yes, since we didnt hook up in Korea back in 03, give me a call when you get here. (520)904-1964 and we'll get together.

As for shops here, A brief list to get you started;

Murphy's on Ft Lowell and Country Club. Lots of guns and gear, prices are decent and always manned with plenty of folks.

Sportsmans Warehouse in Marana off I-10 and Orange Grove. I-10 north to Orange Grove. Right on Orange Grove and left on Thornydale (next red light). Left on Costco (next red light off of Thornydale). Typical outdoors store with plenty of reloading gear, guns and outdoor gear.

West of Pecos off of Pima. Small shop with good prices.

Rich's gunshop across from West of Pecos on Pima. Decent prices, small shop. Sells mostly low end guns but can have a few decent ones from time to time. Since your at West of Pecos, might as well drop in there as well.

Diamondback Police supply on Kolb and Broadway. Pretty good place, plenty of holsters and decent prices.

Marksman on 29th between Craycroft and Swan. Indoor range, upper priced guns and gun rentals available.

Cashbox pawn on Craycroft between Golf Links and 29th. Decent shop, reloading gear, plenty of pawnshop guns and nice fellas that run the gun side.

Jensens on Prince. Indoor range, decent shop and ok prices.

Centerfire, dont waste your time.

Frontier Firearms on Grant. Decent little shop with mostly older style firearms.

There is another gun shop on Broadway and Camino Seco but I can't remember the store name. Not a bad shop, plenty of accessories and gun parts as well as extra's.

Depending on the dates, you might run into a gun show down here. Check out this website for gunshow listings. http://www.azarms.com/Printable_Calendar.php

We are having a get together on the 15th in Yuma if your down here then.

Take care and safe travel.

Diamondback is a pretty good place full of law enforcement equipment. They are primarily there to service the cops but also sell to the general public as well.

Only issue I had with them is that they wouldn't sell me a handgun unless I had an Arizona ID. Wouldn't take a copy of my military orders like everyone else will (legal).

Other than that, they are a Glock dealer and also sell to military at LEO prices. My G20 was $495 + tax and came with 3 each 15 round mags. I plan on getting a G29 from them after the new year for the same price.

Fella's;

I haven't been in Tucson for some years, my folks retired & lived in the area, but have passed on now. I seem to recall that J&G is there, has that changed? In any case, now that was a gun store.

Tucson Guns and Western Artifacts is the shop @ Broadway & Camino Seco.

Rich closed Rich's Gun Room on Pima, but another fella opened up in the same store - Pima Guns and Pawn.

Marksman bought out the old Jensen's range at Prince & Flowing Wells, and it has been re-opened under new management.

Rumor has it that Jensen's on Pima was bought out by Second Amendment Guns(or is it 2ndA Firearms) of CA - I'm not sure if/when they will be re-opening.

There's probably going to be an IDPA match on 12-24-06 at the Pima Pistol Club, I'll probably be there - check out www.pimapistol.org for times/directions.

If you're going to be living in AZ for the foreseeable future, consider getting your CCW training from Diamondback - there's a 50% chance you'll draw me as your instructor!

Holy craps! It's Skunkabilly! The skunk! The Myth! The Legend!

:D Good to know you still come 'round the place, Skunk.

Marksman on 29th between Craycroft and Swan. Indoor range, upper priced guns and gun rentals available.

Really? I've found that Marksman has some of the lowest prices on handguns anywhere in the city -- I called around to about 8-10 shops when looking for a XD-45 and a Ruger MkIII, and they had the best prices by far. That, and the staff is generally pleasant.

The range there is quite nice, and they're full-auto friendly if you have any Class III toys.

Now, if only there was a rifle range as close as Marksman. The Tucson Rifle Club's way too far away to drive on most days, so I've been shooting a lot more pistol and a lot less rifle than I want to since I've moved out here in August.

It's kind of a dive, and has an incredibly unsavory name, but Legal Pawn was actually a pretty cool place.

I hit them up in the middle of the long LA-Austin drive, and got a Marlin 60 and a Remington Nylon 66 for $175 OTD. They had some good handgun deals also, but as an out-of-stater I couldn't indulge. Seemed like really nice folks, small operation.

My main impression of Tuscon, from a visitor's perspective, was that those Sinaloan taquerias and birrierias (sp?) were awesome. Just a slightly different regional variant of Mexican food, but to a connoisseur it's a delightful change.

The Mexican food in Tucson is a delight by itself.
I now live in Sierra Vista but when in Tucson I hit the rounds.

Diamondback is usually great to the military and I buy a gun a year there. A Sig 229 DAK will probably be next.

Here is what I've found, Murphy'a for reloading and used guns.

The Frontier for old stuff and a good yarn.

Slash K for reloading and Corbon bullets.

I used to live at Jensons as a kid, college, and fired many matches with Bob at 3 Points.

The fellow at the new Tucson Guns and Western stuff is a really nice guy. I stopped there a bit shaken after my having to draw my CCW last June in an incident.

As Lennyjoe points out, J&G is in Prescott. They *used* to be further south, but I don't remember if it was in Tempe or Tucson. But when their mailorder business began to far exceed their local sales, the decided to go where it is much cooler. Now they don't have much of a "gunstore." Just a small "catalog showroom" attached to a giant warehouse.

Other than Desert trails (a dive) there is the range out by the fairgrounds. Nice place, plenty of range control and they are even giving the CCW class now.

long LA-Austin drive
Matthew (and anyone else who might go through there),
If you make that drive often, you must go through Deming, NM. Visit New Deal Shooting Sports 6600 Ventura Rd SE (505) 546-3350. I don't mean to sound like an ad for them, but they have some awsome deals and quite a selection for a shop in such a small town. They make the gunshops in Las Cruces look trivial by comparison.

You know, I seriously considered posting to THR and asking what gunshops I should hit up between Austin and LA.

Downside is, there's plenty of stuff you can't buy going westward. Had to minutely inspect my car and bags before heading out to get rid of all the hi-cap mags, loose flash-suppressors, C4 packs, etc. And then couldn't buy certain neat items until I made the trip back. Travelling east, you'll hit the ocean before you hit another AWB.

The main must-stops on the I-10/I-8 stretch were the date palm shakes on I-8, just inside the AZ border, and the fresh natural cider shop on I-10 in eastern AZ. I used to have the exit numbers for both those memorized.

I have to disagree about J&G in Prescott. They have a big (recently renovated) gun shop with hundreds of guns on display for retail sale, (at least they did last summer when I was there on leave from the muddle east). This is one of my "must go" places, and usually pick up a couple of pieces there every year. They always have a good selection of police/security trade ins at decent prices. They are very accomodating in allowing me to order stuff on-line which they hold for me until I show up every summer. A nice service that saves me shipping costs.

Check out their website

Willcox! About 30 miles south of my location. Durn good apples from Apple Annies.

The "catalog showroom" was kind of a facetious comment, considering what they have available in the catalog.;) Yea, they have hundreds of guns on display - but only one of each of what they have in the warehouse in the back.:D :D :D

Kor does a nice job on the concealed weapons course. My wife and I took our refresher courses from him a few years ago.

He also is a good guy to stand guard duty with on an ammo pad :)

(keep it up, Tom...:neener: BTW, I dunno if you remember SP4 Rob Levin, but he was just in my CCW class this past Saturday - small world, eh?)
