Ok guys I am looking to buy a AK at the gun show in a few weeks. What should I look for and what should I avoid ?

How to tell who made it what country ? In other words how to read the markings

Thanks
Bob Adams

I would get either VEPR or ARSENAL {SA M7 or SLR}. I would stay away from Romanian SAR1-3 because they have gotten expensive, and personally I dont think they are worth the money anymore when you can save up a bit more and get a quality AK.

Krebs and AK-USA are also worth considering. In my personal experience gun show prices are the same and sometimes more than the gunstores so I would shop around a bit. Also you can save one you really want by putting it on layaway at a shop, something you cant do at a show.

AK's are fun, addictive, and a lot to learn about. for more info go to ak-47.net.

Good luck.

Arsenal SA M-7.

It's FAR better than the Romanian SARs in quality. I had one for awhile and regret selling it. It was almost too nice to shoot. I got mine from FAC for $530something plus shipping.

I suppose if the Romanians were still cheap a case could be made for them, but when people are asking $400 for them, spend the additional money and get a US made forged receiver AK. You won't be sorry.

Well, I may go against the grain here, but get any AK you want, SAM7, SAR1, WASR blah blha blah. They all function the same afterall. But, since you are going to a gunshow to get it, all the better. Just fondle all of the AK's you can and find one that you like the feel of that you can agree on a price for. Just make sure to inspect for things like canted sites gas tubes.... etc. Then enjoy your new gun!

With the recent price spike in Romanian weapons the Bulgarian and Russian guns are looking like a lot better deal to me. Just my two cents.

Depends on what you intend to use it for. I have three AK's, and my first was a 2003 model Romanian SAR-1. I turned it into a project gun, and it is awesome!
It now sports a nicely re-finished stockset, and a polished charging handle. As well as freshly parkerized metal, and painted in lettering on the reciever.
Pretty much any AK will function flawlessly. It's mostly a matter of what you want to spend, and whether you want it to look perfect right out of the box.
If you want to add your own personal touches...The Romanians are a great platform to build upon. Otherwise, I would look for one of the more expensive versions.
No matter what you get, it probably won't be your last. AK's are addictive! You might even consider going all out, and just getting a pre-ban Poly-tech underfolder right out of the gate. What better way to start a Kalashnikov collection?!:D
