Gun stolen...did I do enough?

My dad calls me the other day. He seemed upset and said he had bad news. I thought someone had died...

Anyway, he tells me the Taurus 9 shot .22 revolver I bought him for his Birthday was stolen by his step son and sold for drugs.

This step son was a grown man when he married his second wife and although personable the stepson has always found a way to scew my dad over. Cars, money, houses etc...

My dad asked me if he should report it stolen

He wasn't sure if he should send the POS step son to jail.

I told him the serial number for my records and informed him to immediately report it stolen in case it was used in a crime.

As the giver of the gun gift do I need to do anything else to protect myself?

The right advice

If it gets stolen you better protect yourself. Report it as stolen let the cards fall where they will.

By all means, report it. If it gets used in a crime, which is very likely, you do not want any negative impact to come against you or dad. It will get entered into the NCIC database. Be sure to get the officers report number as soon as you can. By the way, NRA membership comes with $1000.00 worth of free firearms insurance. Call them for details, but you MUST have a police report filed no matter what you do.

thats a shame. i would report it and have him face the consequences of his actions and not let the theif back in his house and get a restraining order against him so he can have him arrested if he comes back instead of getting a warning for tresspassing.

By all means, report it stolen. Last year, my neighbor's 16-year old punk son stole my CZ-75 out of my car. Fortunately, it was recovered and I eventually got it back. If I hadn't reported it, the police would not even know to be looking for it.

You need to do what you can to make sure et cetera doesn't include murder.

The time I had guns stolen I was shocked at little attention it did get - the cops took a report over the phone and that was it. They acted like they could care less, and I never have gotten them back or heard anything about them. This was 10 years ago in Lodi, CA.

Not only that, in many states, the gun MUST be reported stolen within so many days from when the owner noticed it missing. In MI, I know that number is ten.

and by all means - make sure you have serials/pictures of the weapons.

I keep mine on my computer w/ digital photo's.

My gf's dad had all his guns (16 in all) stolen at one point. The cops found em (was a relative that stole them - cause he knew the dad had them) and they didn't get gun one back because they couldn't prove that THOSE guns were his.

don't know what happened to em.

Either way - they keep that paperwork much longer than they are supposedly able to do ... so you don't want it reverse traced to the last person reported to have it/bought it... and have it in a crime w/o a police report to back you up that it was stolen.

About 15 years ago I sold a friend a gun that was stolen a few days later when he went out of town on business. It had shown the gun to his neighbor and the neighbors crackhead son stole it ( is anyone seeing a pattern here) My own mother doesn't know how many guns I have or where they're kept.
Anyway he sold it to another crack head who used it to hold up an undercover cop working some kinda sting op. He apparently dropped the gun and it was recovered.
This happened late Saturday Night or early Sunday morning. The cops were at my house early Monday afternoon to talk to me and according to my neighbor they had been there ealier when I was at work.

The reason they came to see me was because my neighbor being out of town had not reported the gun stolen. My amateur version of a bound book was all tht kept me from being at the very least inconvienced .

Another friend who I gave a gun to was able to retrieve his because of the info I had in the book, proving somewhat that the gun did not have a 12" barrel and a sawed off grip when I gave it to him
