I don't know exactly how it happened, but somehow I became 43 years old, didn't I just blink?
I've been interested in guns and shooting for at least 37 years, according to my parents. I have been reloading now for 25 years, after teaching myself the basics in the dorms at college. My roommate didn't share my enthusiasm...
When I started, I bought basic Lee equipment from a long-gone gunstore in Brea, California that was across the street from the Brea Mall. They set my up with most of what I needed to get going. As I recall, they closed a few years later. I was recently reminded of this when I went to Southern California Gun, after just discovering the store a few months ago, they were announcing a that they were going out of business.
My favorite gunstore was "The Gunsight" in Fullerton, CA owned by George DiLeo. I had been going in there (dragging my Dad) since I was about 8 or 9. I bought my first gun there, along with my two editions of Dean Grennell's "ABC's of Reloading. Over the years I went there for supplies as well as knowledge and the lessons George could provide. Unfortunately, George got sick, presumably from the cigarettes he chain-smoked (never was without a lit one in hand) and he couldn't sell the store, so he liquidated it back in 2006.
I think it is a Mexican market now...
There were others - I think there was one on Brea Blvd, before it was widened and all the Mom-n-Pop shops were kicked out so the Big Boxes could move in.
I'm sure there were lots of other stores that escape my memory, but I'll always remember the Gunsight, and George! Thanks for everything George!
