I just saw "No Country for Old Men" on the movie channel this week-end. A pretty good movie with a crazy character that went around killing others in his search for $2M worth of drug money. He was using a pretty strange silenced rifle. I could never really get a good look at it, but am curious to know what it is supposed to be... do you guys have a clue as to what type of firearm that was? It seemed to be fired at short and far distances with great accuracy in the movie. I know that is movie hype, but would like to know what others thought. What kind of gun was he using? And does something like that really exist?

This gun?

Or this gun/cattle killer?

It's a shotgun with a ribbed vent barrel for a front sight arrangement? And with a silencer no less. All I can do is laugh.

That appears to be a Remington 870 with a mock up of a silencer. It is probably something that the props department made and is non-functional. Often only primers are used and the sound of gunfire is edited in, or out in this case.

The silencer looks to be too small (length and bore) to be anything but a movie prop. The shotgun silencers I have seen have all been longer than 12 inches and at least 2 inches wide.

Slightly off subject but Cormac McCarthy

author of the book NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (and several others) is reported to be very interested in guns as reported to me by one avid fan of his. In any event I read the book and it is very, very good in my opinion. In the book the author describes in detail the gun and scope that the hero was using to hunt antelope. I do not think that the killer had a silenced shotgun in the book, that was something made up for the movie.

As it was already stated it is to be 1187. I beleive the book said it was a military style semi auto shootgun?

Question...

So if a guy that looked like this....

In a police car pulled you over and came walking up to you and said "Hold still" would you be stupid enough to do it....

Or would you have pulled your SD gun long before and neutralized the threat...
