Guns and Moving

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to know what the procedure is for moving from one state to another with a gun. I live in New Mexico and will be moving to California next month. I have never really focused on gun laws in other states, but I know it's different. I have a S&W Sigma, if that makes a difference. Does anyone know the process or where I can look for this information.

If you are going to use professional movers choose very carefully. I have heard many stories here in Fl about movers who would give you a quote then when they arrived at your new home your stuff would be in storage until you paid a lot more money to get it out. And stuff is always missing or it get damaged.


If you have a large safe and can't put them in your car rent a trailer from Uhaul and stick it in there.


You can get a tow ball put on any model car. I have one on my Hyundai Accent, I have towed my buddies 17 Ft boat with 60 Horse motor all over with no problems and when I had my boat I towed it everywhere with no trouble
 
It looks like I have to obtain a permit from he DOJ. How do I do this? Where would I go?

I am still not sure if my gun is an "assault weapon".

Are you planning to drive your car from NM to CA? If so, I would move it myself. What states are you planning to drive through? Do you have any carry permits you can take advantage of?
 
Many moving companies (every one I have used in 7 interstate moves) refuse to knowingly transport firearms. And if you slip your guns into a shipment without declaring them, the movers have no liability for them if they are damaged, lost, or stolen. I have always carried my guns in my car when I moved.

Haha, that's funny. I have heard that before. My biggest fear was that my gun would be taken away from me. I am sure I will not be very liked in a lot of places with my NRA sticker on my car window. :eek: oh well!

Anyway, I am driving myself through whatever states are along I40. I do not have any carry permits, though. In NM, as long as it is visable while you are walking or driving, you can carry it.

I can't speak to the legality issue, but as for the move itself, I wouldn't let anyone that I have to 'tip', take possession of the firearm or ammo.

Also, check the statutes for transporting firearms for each state you'll pass through if you're moving it yourself, via your personal vehicle.
 
NRA sticker on your car sounds nice.

It sounds doubly nice to someone who is looking for guns to steal. You're advertising to them with your sticker. How hard is it for someone to sit across the street in the morning, waiting for you to drive off to work for the day? A little dexterity with your front door lock - poof - 8 hours to leisurely search the house for goodies.

Also, if you get pulled over, it gives the officer just one more thing to contemplate while walking up to your driver's side window. Sometimes not a problem, sometimes... well, it depends on the officer's view of civilian firearms posession.

In some parts of California this will make you a target of official oppression by LEOs who are firmly in the "ANTI" camp, or work for an administration that is.
 
California has wacky rules and is not considered gun friendly... but actually, other than specific things, it is gun friendly.

They outlawed the .50 BMG, but you can buy and use any OTHER .50. Talk about weird.

They outlawed a list of 'evil black rifles', but if it isn't on the list, you can buy it. So SOME rifles that look and act like AR-15's are legal. More weirdness.

Anyway, New Mexico and Arizona are both 'gun-friendly' and you wil have no problems transporting firearms.

As mentioned above, put handguns in a locked container in your trunk to transport it in California. Ammo must not be in the same container.

Other than that precaution, you will have no problems.

I have never heard of a California police officer caring about an NRA sticker. There are lots of opinionated people in California. Almost all are tolerated. Even NRA members are welcome here.

Police are generally 'not allowed' to profile. But unless you look or act like a potential criminal, any traffic enforcement officer has much better things to do than take time to hassle you for your political stickers.

Yep, exactly what I was told. I moved all mine myself. (rent a trailer or something). They won't move guns or ammo (ammo esp beause something about federal shipping laws)
besides, all that stuff is heavy and movers work off weight not volume.
 
I've had an NRA sticker, and two hunting club stickers, and no problems in CA (except Berkeley -- but that's another state of mind). You shouldn't have a problem.

Note, though, that SF now has a ban in effect, one that's not very well enforced. But you should be aware of it if you're moving there.
 
One of the happiest days of my life was when I saw California in my rear-view mirror on my move out of the state. State government's unenlightened attitudes towards guns are just the tip of the iceberg.
