Say if my parents give me a handgun as a gift for my 18th birthday would I be allowed to travel to a friend's house to shoot even though to purchase a handgun/handgun ammo in Ohio you must be 21 or older? What would happen if I got pulled over for whatever reason and I had the handgun in the car (in trunk and in locked case)? Would I get charged for possession?

How do these laws work regarding receiving a firearm as a gift while you legally cannot purchase the gun/ammo?

Not living in Ohio, I can't say what they do.

Here in Texas, you can own at 18, you just can't buy from an FFL holder at 18.

Unless there is a specific prohibition in Ohio laws, you can purchase handguns and handgun ammunition from other residents of your state face to face at 18. The 21 age limit is a federal law and only applies to purchasing from a licensed dealer.

In Ohio, you are Good to Go---a "gift" from a parent.

BUT you are NOT allowed to buy ammo for a handgun until you are 21yrs. old.
