Dear All,
There have been cases of people buying guns in the past, and having them experience rapid appreciate- i.e. Pre-86 transferrable MG's, some variants of 1911's, lugers after WWII, etc. My question is this- I have noticed the price of SKS's have gone up alot over the past 5-10 years (they used to be $50-60 a piece if bought by the crate, now I am seeing them for 170-250). WE are looking at investing in some firearms for the future- what firearm/class of firearms do you think is going to appreciate greatly in the next 10 years-
Mosins, K-31's?
What about revolvers/ current autopistols/ shotguns/ etc.
We have plenty of space, so we could stack a couple crates of Mosins up if we needed to.

Thanks in advance for your time.
P.S. Would we be better off just keeping our $$ parked in CD's instead?

My guess is that on November 5, 2008 you will see a significant increase in the price of most, if not all, firearms, as well as ammo.

ok- thanks for the advice

I have checked the last threads, and I told my father the same thing. We already have diversified investments, and I put it to him this way about buying guns for investments.
"you collect coins already, don't you- and you would never sell those"

Honestly, I guess, just collect to collect, or buy guns to shoot- that is about it. I can see what you are saying about investments being too risky.

Thanks all.

There are two reasons to invest in guns.

Scarcity caused by government (pre-86 machine guns, pre-import ban AW's)
Scarcity caused by history (all matching WWII garands, mint colt peacemakers, etc).

Of the two I would much rather invest in the latter, however, I still wouldn't invest for monetary reasons. Some of the guns will appreciate quite well, some might actually lose value. A diversified portfolio of bonds and equities will probably perform just as well, with lower risk.

If you simply love old guns, then by all means, buy them, but I wouldn't think of it as "saving for retirement"
