Guns in Belize

Guns are a very uniquely an American thing, and not many countries around the world with exception of lawless countries allow any personal hand guns. I don't know the situation in Belize, but I suspect you can't.

You ever consider Virgin Islands? I think its easier to own guns since its an American territory. Although, its not nearly as beautiful as Belize I am sure. OF course, from what I am told, in countries like those, if you know how to bribe and win sympathy from the right people, there is always a way to acquire what you want, especially guns. Guatemala I hear is very gun friendly culture, if you're a bandit that is..

yes -- you have to apply for a non resident permit

here are the forms .. (the first one)

I think it cost like $100-150 last time I checked .

This is why wild guesses aren't much good on the internet these days; odds are someone who actually knows the answer will show up shortly.

Fetus: are you yourself a Belize resident who owns firearms? Got any insight as to the local shooting scene, legal issues, cultural issues?

EDIT: Found a neat thread here through the magic of Google: http://ambergriscaye.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/227871/What_is_the_story_on_gun_owner.html

Have you ever been to Belize city?

And you would consider living there?

Personally I wouldn't want to live in Belize City from what I remember of it. I would choose Placencia or somewhere along that peninsula.

Why Americans want to retire and move to third world countries where Americans are looked at as targets instead of residents, with no ability to resist tyranny through ownership of firearms, is beyond me.

I love it when you see shows like House Hunters International with some Americans that have a "nothing will ever happend to me" sheep mentality wanting to move to places like Guatemala and El Salvador where you can't have guns without tons of red tape and you are guilty until proven innocent.

I apologize to the OP and moderators for being off thread and knocking the OPs choice of retirement place, but when I saw Belize my rant mode went on.

Rant mode off.

Just my .02,

Are there laws in Belize? That's news. It's a nation famous for great scuba diving while fleeing creditors. Like Jamaica but not as uptight. I've long wanted to go there ;-)

Caribbean countries have strict gun laws and for the most part are corrupt. Be prepared to fork out bribe money. Generally, these countries also feel you having a gun is a threat to their economy. Why? Because if people knew how to defend themselves, it would take away from the profits of the many security firms that operate in those countries. Third world countries in general, rather have you hire a full time armed security guard then for you to perform your own security. Many of the security firms have some type of a connection with government directly. Basically, they feel that somehow, they want to profit from protecting you and also that with the low wages in those countries, why not be able to support someone and his family with a security job.

Most likely the security guard will be incompetent, undertrained and who can vouch for how trustworthy? The rigorous criteria we may have in our own country is non-existant there. They just take some guy from streets, put a uniform on him, give him some basic firearm lessons and now he is the guy to defend you and your family. There was a report about two Canadian tourists killed in Dominican Republic after the thieves bribed the guard of their hotel, who assisted in aiding them to their victims.

I was reading that non-citizens have hard time getting guns in those countries.

But as I say, connections are everything in these type of countries. So, if it is somehow profitable for some government agent to arm yourself, then it may be worth his while to help you. Third world countries are miserable when it comes to deal with bureaucracy. Don't feel shy or ashamed to ask if there is something you can do for so and so to speed things up.. Its just how things work there.

Question 1 - yes

Question 2 - no

I was thinking of doing the same thing, especially because of cheap living and English-speaking people. Crime is prevalent, infrastructure is severely lacking

If you don't mind Spanish, take a look at Costa Rica. IIRC, guns can be owned
