Guns of Battlestar Galactica - CZ-52!!

Has anyone considered the idea that maybe instead of them being our cousins for a lost tribe of Kobol, that instead they are actually our decendants? They've already said that the technology that they have now is much more primitive than what they had in the past. They had to revert backwards to a lesser level of technology to keep the Cylons from infiltrating them. Maybe the reason why they have the same names and similar customs is that maybe Kobol was a colony of Earth, not the other way around. Check this: Earth develops interstellar technology, colonizes a world called Kobol, time passes, hundreds..if not thousands..hundreds of thousands of years.....History becomes legend, legend becomes myth....myths change from generation to generation....Kobol becomes home in the eyes of its inhabitants.....then they set out to colonize worlds themselves...but the idea of Earth is still there....albeit changed. Eventually the myth gets so convoluted that the real past is all but lost. So imagine the fleet finally gets to Earth only to find that it isnt a new home but the true home humanity left so long ago. The real kick in the pants would be if they got there and find Earth just a used up frozen chunk of rock in space. That would suck.
Or maybe they get to Earth and find that the colony that went there crashed, barely survived and reverted back to a more primitive lifestyle...cavemen. So maybe they get here and instead of being our cousins, instead of being our decendants, they are in fact our ancestors.
There's really so many ways they could go with this.
Maybe it will all be a dream sequence inside Glen Larson's head.

Could be, but really I think that it's just that the show is character and story driven, and the guns used are just props whose technological nature doesn't add to or subtract from the story in the way that the guns in Aliens did. The camera on BSG tends not to have much of a love affair with the guns they use.

Primary weapon for the crew is the FN 5-7.
They also have South African Vektors (9mm pistol).
Dana Delaney had a Makarov and her accomplices had a CZ52 which showed up again later in other episodes. They used COP 357 4 shot derringers. As mentioned previously, their long guns are mostly Beretta Storms and HK
MP5s. I think they have Beretta Storm pistols as well. In the early episodes the pilots (Helo and Starbuck) had revolvers with stuff hanging off it. I think they were Matebas.

Actually, the reason everybody in the galaxy speaks English is explained quite beliveably in Poul Anderson's book, "The High Crusade".

Ah heck, I just said to myself "hey, the Galactica was supposed to be mothballed as a museum so they probably filled her up with good old "historic" stuff so that's what they had on hand after the attack".

Mostly though I just didn't worry about it. Liked the show at first but to be honest I miss television with self contained episodes. This whole "serial-soap-opera" thing where you miss two episodes and then can't figure out what the hell is happening doesn't work for me 'cause I don't watch much tv anyway so I tend to miss large chunks.

On topic for the forum though, most of the weapon handling seems to be pretty good (four rules and all).

Bump.

I knew Starbuck would be back! Wonder if she got some coffee on earth and was surprised at the store named after her callsign? :) Loved the cover of "All Along the Watchtower" too.

On Youtube there's an outtake when Tigh first met Adama in a bar. Adama grabs the bartenders sawed off shotgun with the very tactical looking foregrip. Nice "Miami Vice" throwback! Any guesses on what kind of shotgun that was? Tough bars they have in the Colonies back then!

As for apalo trying to shoot someone with a CZ 52 that wasn't cocked maybe CZ 52's from kobol are DAO.

Every bad idea I have ever come up with suddenly seems better under the light of a DAO cz52. Perish the thought!

I just read this thread the other day. I'm not Mormon. I do have a good friend who is and I have done lots of investigation into the church on my own. I've even visited Joseph Smith's home in Palmyra NY. I've attended the Hill Komorah pageant.(SP)

The mentioning of a LDS reference on the show made me look it up.

Oh, and "Kobol" is from the original 1970s series, and was a joke on the computer language COBOL. I'm unaware of any overt LDS references in the show.

Abraham 3:3-10 describes God as living near a star called Kolob.

Heck, you can even say that there are LDS references on SG-1. (asscention)

I really, really hope they don't crash land most of their ships on a primitive Earth on a Continent they colonize and name Atlantis. That would really tick me off.

I really, really hope that they find a solar system with hundreds of inhabitable worlds and full of humans claiming heritage from an Earth-that-was.

They could then settle on a curiously deserted planet called Miranda...

Come on, you know you'd watch it!

Somebody came up with that one last year on a roleplaying board where I am a member. In case you didn't know, the roleplaying games for BSG and Serenity (the Firefly movie) were written and published by the same company...

The new BSG is an awesome show. I think the reason you see so many familiar firearms is for all the aforementioned reasons (cost of production, familiarity, etc.), but there is another. If you notice, the COs quarters on Pegasus have Thompson submachine guns and 1911's in the display racks. There is speculation that there will be some connection between this and the fact that they are searching for Earth. Also, remember that in Season 3 those 4 Cylons heard a Jimi Hendrix song playing (All Along the Watchtower).

What is strange is that they have so hi tech stuff...they still use "antique" weapons!

Really, when you think about it, it's not all that wierd.

Here's a little game: just look around your kitchen and evaluate it as if it were appearing in a 1930's science fiction movie. From a 1930's perspective, some things would look impossibly futuristic, while others would look just like what they've got. Most of the stuff - pots, pans, stove, fridge, etc. would look like slightly/cosmetically updated versions of what they have. Some things, like the butcher block, would be no different than what they had. Same goes for both of the pistols I regularly carry. The microwave, cell phone, and dishwasher would surely be new to them, but fairly obvious innovations. The laptop computer and the wireless internet connection would seem impossibly futuristic.

So, I would expect just that kind of mix going forward from now.

The future won't be composed of entirely new stuff. It will be a mix of old stuff that's exactly the same, slightly updated old stuff, new stuff that we can easily forsee, and really new stuff.

You also have to remember - they have to avoid high technology wherever possible. If they stick computer chips in things the cylons can start attempting to hijack their functioning. Good luck hacking into a 1911.

Any guesses what that pistol was that Tigh had a "daymare" with in his hand, and later took out of a locker and slammed on the desk? Looked different than the other pistols. Flatter and smaller, not a FN 5.7. Makarov maybe?

Good final season so far! Baltar is TOO fraking lucky! :)

It's worth mentioning that Beretta just apparently released a Cx4 Storm muzzle attachment that's supposed to be the same one used on the rifles in the show. They labeled it as a "BSG" device, but don't mention the show any further than that.
