I went out of town for the weekend. We have been having problems with folks coming around late at night knocking on doors, asking for directions recently. I don't have the money for a safe, so I figured the best place to put my guns in was the attic. The access hole is well hidden plus its a PITA to get into so I figured this was the safest place for them JIC I got broke into. My question is, it's been awful hot down here in NC lately and can only imagine the temp of the attic (Well insulated,no attic fan). Should I worry about the heat damaging the stocks on the guns or would it be safe to leave them up there for awhile?

Thanks,

For the weekend? They'll be fine... unless the boogeyman who lives in the attic likes guns... in which case, you should have hid them in the cellar... with the disembodied ghosts. :D

It's no worse than leaving them in the car trunk for the weekend.

I wouldn't leave a gun with a wooden stock in either place for an entire summer.

A couple few days shouldn't have hurt anything. Just give them a little oil wipedown and proper lube, as the heat might have caused some of the oil to dry out.

Another tip. before I had a safe, I would take my guns apart when I left town and hide parts in different places. I think someone would be less likely to steal a gun they could not use.

put it under the fiberglass insulation, if they do get your guns they will be really really itchy.

I disassemble mine and mix them in with my tools.

Buddy, a good idea I didn't have.

Reminds me of an odd story. My Father died some years ago. His pal insisted that my old man had told him about some guns from WW II that he had hidden in the attic (this was baloney). The pal looked (I was a kid). No Lugers, etc. Point being, tell a trustworthy person if you actually PUT THE GUNS IN THE ATTIC UNDER THE FIBER GLASS!!!. Just in case...

Mine go off site when I'm on vacation in secure storage.

Update

Okay I put all five of my long guns in my attic on June the 6th because I was leaving town for the weekend. Tonight I decided that they had to come down and even though it was a PITA to get them up there. It was a a very hot day down here in NC today and it's going to be the same tomorrow. So I got them out. Some of you warned me of the humidity down here would rust them and this is what I found.

1)Any excess oil on the actions, stocks and barrels was completely gone.
2)Barrels of my two shotguns, and my two .22's were fine. The barrels were fouled when I put them up,so I guess this prevented any rust forming in the barrels.
3)My 336 Marlin in 30-30 didn't fair so well. This is a brand new gun with less than 150 rounds through it. The gun was throughly cleaned and oil before putting it up. I did run a wet patch of oil through the barrel at this time also. There is minor surface rust on the rifling near the muzzle:mad:
4) I did wrap them up in a blanket when I put them up there. Even though I did this all guns are covered in small specks of fiberglass.
5)Somehow or another I managed to put two small but semi-deep gouges in the stocks of my Marlin 60 and Mossberg 183T. The Mossy hurts me the most as this belonged to my granddaddy.

Lesson learned. I am never doing this again:eek:. Next time when I decide to leave town and want to hide my guns I am leaving them with a trusted relative. If I don't already have a safe. I know what I will be doing when I get home from work tomorrow!

BTW: What's that stuff that you can put on stocks to bring them back to live? I think it's tru oil or something,if you can tell me I'd appreciate it.

To store your firearms during a long period of time (1+ years or airline travel)losen the barrel screws one full turn so that temperature or altitude changes do not crack the stock/fittings and coat the barrel completely with some good gun oil after cleaning. Make sure that you do not store them in a gun case. This is again one of the worst places as it will foul your firearm in high humidity states because they do not breathe adequately. A 100% wool "gun sock" is the absolute best thing to place over your firearms when they are in storage. This should ensure that they will be there in 100% working condition for years to come.

Why has nobody seen this yet:

1) He has his first name posted. :uhoh:
2) He has his last name posted.
3) He has his city posted.
4) He has his state posted. :scrutiny:
5) He has posted that he owns firearms. :(
6) He has posted that he owns no vault. :what:
8) He has posted that he has left his guns in the attic.

Why not just take out a full-page add, all who would like free guns, stop and "shop"! :cuss: :banghead:

Changes have been made. Thanks for pointing that stuff out to me Doc. Never crossed my mind until you said something.

I have been alterted to "other" websites that advise their "members" to, "...go the THR and shop". People know we exist, and they look for the lists.

Mods~ I think Docs quote should make for it's own thread and sticky for all THR'ers to see... just yesterday I had to PM someone on another forum who gave his home phone number in the classified ads... I sent him his home address and the link for the map google provided, free of charge, to get to his house.... Be smart people. Great point Doc!
