Guns on College Campuses...

Texas Christian University allows students to check firearms into the campus police department. Anytime you want to check it out, you can. Literally 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Obviously this program is intended for students that live on-campus, and want access to their firearms for hunting/range/etc.

Luckily, while I was a freshman and living in the dorms, my parents lived only 15 minutes from campus. So I kept my shotguns at their house.

The University of Illinois here in Champaign does not allow firearms on campus, period. Not in buildings, dorms, parking lots, etc. There is also no where for those living on campus to store firearms. The PD won't take them.
If you are living on campus and want to keep your firearm, you'd better know someone who lives off campus and have them store it for you.

I thought that was just the IL state borders, period. :neener:

Though:

I don't think you understand how much most academics hate guns. They are utopian pacifists. Think about it, most womens studies programs teach the idea that all sex is rape, and that men are evil. Ever hear of womyn? They hated men so much they took the man out of woman. And you think you are going to get to carry a gun as a man in that environment?

Question. Did you GO to college? Mine wasn't like that at all.

Maned,

Get to know some women's studies profs. They ARE that nutty. Period.

Women's studies professors = the hardest feminist lefty you have ever seen. Literally, men are their enemy.

Again, I state:

get rid of the stupid call boxes, forget the self-defence "beat the man in padding courses". Let college students carry concealed, and your assault crimes on campus will decrease. Or maybe keep the call boxes so the girls can proudly state to the campus police, "I just shot my attacker." A lot of college students walk to school and if you're in a major city, you're bound to be accosted by one of those damn homeless people who seem to be on every corner.

Eiehter way I would prefer legal CCW on campus myself. However if some states will not do that they should at least provide you with a place to store your weapons. You have all your rights on campus except your 2nd? Somehow that seems wrong that the schools will accomodate your other rights but not accomodate your 2nd A rights.

Illini52 try going to UIC and finding someone to store your guns. You have to live in the suburbs. I was at Southern Illinois in Carbondale. And they had gun storage at the police station.

Most places have gun storage at the police stations in my experience so your weapons should be secure hopefully.

I know this question isnt aimed at me, but I can say that alot of academics ARE that crazy. Business professors typically are not, but any social sciences type prof are.

There's still the problem that many women are socialized to be 'good' and 'polite'; the "beat the man in padding courses" help some to believe it's OK to defend themselves - a necessary precondition to the effective use of firearms is the realization that you may have to hurt someone, so you must develop the mental attitude that you can and you will.

Librarian,

You have a good point about the defense classing teaching women it's ok to defend oneself. You are right on that. I simply feel that we'd avoid most assaults on campus if criminals knew that women could and may be carrying a firearm. Speaking of polite... she'd never even have to soil her hands with the dirty assailent.

Solar, I am campus police, and you could definitely trust me with your guns, and my entire department. We're all gun nuts anyway.

(However, the state of TN forbids carrying of weapons on any campus K-12 and college, so it's not an issue here between the colleges and the state)

you would trust your guns to campus security/police?

We all like to crack jokes about the campus cops being "glorified security guards", etc. I'm guilty of that myself. But in all honesty, they're some of the best LEO's I've met.

Obviously I cant speak for other schools, but at TCU they're great people. Being a small, private school, they dont need a big force, and with lots of $$$ to throw around, they can afford to hire the best folks available and pay them alot better than any "regular" LE agency. So naturally they attract experienced LEO's, and they can be very selective in who they hire.

The campus cops at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale were very professional. They were a top notch outfit and I was very suprised by their courtesy and professionalism.

One of them was pro CCW. We spoke on that after I mentioned wanting to start a pistol team to the school. I had to go get the permission of the PD to do that. They said we would not be able to but either way they were supportive of the idea and treated us well.

They are still cops. As their job maybe different from the average city cop or rural sheriff they put up with a lot of crap. I am amazed at how much crap they take from the students for simply being police and doing their jobs. Everytime that something small happens the staff calls the campus PD. I remember one instance they called campus PD because a deer was to close to the building and they panicked.

It is unfortunate that this is a "university authority v. state authority" case and not actually about RKBA. I'd like to see Concealed carry made legal in more places. Either that, or I wish TN would adopt Utah's laws regarding carrying on college campuses. However, I don't think my chief in particular would be very fond of it. Oh well, can't win em all.
