I’m looking for a good gun store in the Oklahoma City area. I live in Edmond but I’ll drive for a good deal. I’ve been to the local Sportsman’s warehouse and they have a nice selection.

Turns out I’m getting a nice return from uncle sam and I want a new toy. Sure it nice owning a house. :D

Sportsman's Warehouse is the best place to buy in OKC (customer service and price). Other than that I use my uncle's FFL dealer. I don't really care for Outdoor America (over on NW 10th and Meridian? Maybe Maccarthur). He (FFL) is Bethany-ish I believe. He does private sales too, and even keeps his yellow sheets on elevated wooden pallets by themselves in a storage shed (wink). If you are interested I will pm you his email and or number. Give him a week, two tops and he can get you what ever you want. I have never been disappointed with him or Sportsman's Warehouse.

I totally agree with you on the house thing too:D

Bass Pro (downtown): Don't bother. Nothing fun. It's a local .gov-sponsored big box store that ruined more than its fair share of local businesses, anyhow. Most I've ever used it for is cheap parking for Bricktown.

Sportsman's Warehouse (north OKC): It's okay. Decent selection of handguns and ammo; rifles, optics, and shotguns are standard, run-of-the-mill.

Outdoor America (Macarthur blvd., just south of NW 23rd): On its way out. 30min. wait before someone can help, and unless it's a really big guy with long hair or a wiry young kid, don't expect enthusiastic help. Decent selection of shotguns, very few autos, decent selection of revolvers. Prices are decent. A lot of Benchmade and Cold Steel knives, and a couple unusual guns in their used case. Class III dealer. (former employee)

Brigadoon Military Surplus (Del City): Scant selection, but that's because they sell a lot, and often--one of those places you have to check on every week because they'll get in 10 of something off-the-wall, and sell out almost as fast. Good place for ammo and milsurp equipment. Almost like a franchise for CheaperThanDirt.com. Service is a little faster than OA. Lotsa cheap knives, lotsa bayonets, lotsa common mags, good prices on all. Can sell used, but since it's a business, don't expect much. Class III dealer and manufacturer. (former employee)

CJ (or something) Guns (short ways south of SNU): Poor selection and overpriced usually. Can find a gem sometimes.

Big Boys Guns and Ammo (way south on Council): Overpriced junk. Sell everything at or above MSRP/ Blue Book. Might find something unusual, though.

Outdoor Outfitters (Portland and NW 39th): Small selection and friendly staff. Only been there once, so I can't really say much more.

Mustang Pawn and Gun (Mustang, Hwy 152 and Czech Hall): THE place for used guns. If there's an old Winchester 1300 with a 26" barrel you wished you had, or a lever-action Savage in .308, chances are they might have it. A lot of interesting stuff, like Bushmaster Bullpup pistols, NIB Colt DA revolvers, and so on. It's where I would go if I were looking for an old single-shot .22 or shotgun for under $100.

Hope this helps some. Let me know if there're more questions regarding any of them. :)

Interesting that H&H (I40 & Meridian area) hasn't been mentioned yet given that you can rent guns there to try on the range before making a buying decision. Great selection of both handguns and long guns, including EBRs. Pricing is reasonable, gunsmithing services are available in the store. I will say that ammo pricing is not a strong suit, however.

They also recently added archery to their line of sporting goods.

D'oh! :banghead:

I'll say that I concur with the above. Prior experience seems that their pricing seems a little high on everything, but not overly unreasonable. When OA was in its heyday, they were definately cheaper than H&H with a comparable selection.

Haggling, in any sense, anywhere, is not recommended.

well, I was about to post something, but Dionysusigma beat me to it, dito, from me, and H&H has had some bad things said about them before, but I have never been treated anything but fairly and friendly by them.

I go there to eat often in their cafe (which has some of the best food in OKC, all of it is homemade, home smoked meats and fresh made bread and deserts, at very reasonable prices) I browse their selection of firearms and gear (if you are looking to buy new, this is IMO the best place to go) and I have been known to spend hours walking arounding just looking at all the taxidermy they have on display. They are expanding their cafe soon so there may be some construction going on in the next couple of weeks, but by all means go and check them out (even if you don't plan to buy there, it's a neat place to visit).

It's not exactly OKC, but I've been to Gene Sears' store out in El Reno, west of there. Lots of reloading stuff and guns. The NWTF&S Club in Wichita Falls buys all their shot, primers, powder from him since they're a non-profit and can sidestep the sales tax issue.

In my experience, H&H is worth the premium. Go talk to Will Andrews; I try to deal with him exclusively, because he takes such good care of me.

Gun World--if it still exists--is over on Sunnylane, south of I-40. Prices are high; range time is insanely high, especially with H&H for competition.

I'm pretty sure Outdoor Outfitters closed, or is closing--I've heard they were bought by H&H.

FWIW:

Wow, old memories revived!

When my wife and I were in the Academy in OKC in the early 1970's (we are from Ga.) we rambled around the countryside just enjoying the change from the slash pines, and we found the greatest gun store I'd ever seen in there in Anadarko.

The gun shop covered a whole city block and had all sorts of stuff from the floor to the ceilings.. I lusted after a ww2 Japanese sniper rifle there, but had no money..:barf:

Like everything else (including my youth) that place is probably gone now, but if it's still there you oughta' check it out just for fun..

Best Wishes,

Jesse

I've spent some time in OKC. I really only dealt with H&H. They seemed reasonble to me in terms of price. The floor guys were really helpfull and more than willing to talk to you and answer questions. The range was really nice and the selection of rental guns is expansive. I will say that their rentals aren't kept in the best condition. I rented a 5" Kimber to shoot and it was jamming up every few rounds. THeu guy admitted that they hardly ever clean their rental guns unless they just completely stop firing.

All in all, they're a good shop. I wouldn't steer you away from them.

Bass Pro is a nice store. I liked going in there because they let me bring my gun dog in with me. Overpriced? maybe. but you are shopping in Bricktown.. what do you expect?

+1 for Brigadoon's. Check back often they rotate stock a lot. Also, up the street and around the corner from Brigadoon's is King Gun and Pawn, they are pretty good.

OK Shooters wiebsite is THE BEST! I've bought and sold on there, great people.

I would not drive into the parking lot to let my dog crap on Gunworld's grass. They are nothing but a rip-off.

H&H is THE PLACE to shoot in OKC, for buying - their selection is huge and prices are average.
