My best friend has a Trapdoor in 45-70 (circa 1880) and a Remington Rolling Block Model 1 in 43 Spanish. They appear to be in decent cosmetic and mechanical condition.

He is looking for a good gunsmith in the northern Virginia/Maryland area who can check that the metal is still safe to use (blackpowder only, of course) and can determine the best bullet diameter for these specific rifles.

Any suggestions for such a gunsmith would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Jeff

No gunsmith I know of would be able to test if the metal is safe to use, as that would require analysis far beyond their capability. In fact, determining this would probably require destructive metalurgy testing. All the smith can do is render an opinion on mechanical condition - things like head space, overall condition and the like.

Fleet,

Thanks for the correction. I meant to write mechanism instead of metal. SIGH! (I should definitely wake up before touching a keyboard in the morning.)
