I just bought my first handgun (Taurus 24/7 PRO) and am currently keeping it in the box it came in with a combination lock on it. I was looking around for a small safe for it. I found a gun vault biometric safe on buds gun shop for
$285. Would this be a good purchase or should I just keep it in it's locked case?

i thought i might pass on some advice i read on here once that made a lot of sense to me. can't remember who on here said it but he said when shopping for a gun safe to buy the absolute biggest one you can afford at the time because otherwise they'll just fill up quickly and you'll have to buy another one and upgrade. If you plan on buying more guns it may be smart to buy a bigger safe. if this gunvault fits all your needs then it's sounds a pretty decent deal to me. good luck.

For mild duty, a regular gunvault will suffice. You can get a small one for around $90 and the larger for about $100 or so on ebay (I did!). I don't mind that they are electronic as they also have key backup.

I also have the handgunsafe 401-S. Built like a tank and no batteries, but more like $200.

Depending on if you keep your ammo in the safe, I'd get the large gunvault to save money and you could easily store more than one gun. For tamper proof safety and no batteries get the 401-S or it's brethren.

For ammo, tools, etc., I bought a cheapo 1.8CF off of ebay for like $70 shipped.

Officemax and Office Depot have small safes that would work for you. Harbor Freight has one that isn't bad. I wouldn't spend too much on it if I was you.

I use a gunvault I got off of ebay for my bed side gun. Very quick access and actually pretty secure. I keep the backup key in my "walmart special" safe, along with my other guns.

I have a Gunvault with the four digit keypad right next to the bed, bolted down. It also has a key lock in case the electronics fail or the battery goes dead. A small safe like this is a great place to keep the "nightstand gun" since it is instantly accessible to me or anyone in the family, but is still locked up. I don't have to constantly be putting it in or getting it out of the big safe. I bought it at Cabelas for about $125.00 or so.

Like others have said, the gunvault sits next to bed and holds the HD pistol. My shotty is locked with a LifeJacket and hanging on the wall. I agree getting the biggest safe you can afford is really good idea. You leave more than on gun together in a safe and they will multiply. :D Next thing you know you've got a whole collection...and that's a good thing.:D

Use the search tool. There are dozens of excellent safe threads here. Don't be mislead into thinking that you can buy a "vault" for less than several thousand. Even the $2,000.00 "safes" can be broken into within 10 minutes time.

Get the best, biggest, highest quality you can afford so it can't as easily be pryed out and carried off. Buy insurance.

Do a search...there is a lot of good reading from people here to sell these safes, and from others who own them. By the way, safes are like holsters...in time, you'll have more than one.

The gunvault deluxe has a/c power. That's the stuff I've got. also has battery.

My wife also really likes the alarm. I think I paid $126.50 shipped for the bigger, deluxe version.

Don't buy those cheap safes - they are not good at handling moisture and are not made for gun storage.

I researched all of those mini pistol safes to find 1 to put by my bed. I have read complaints about the bio metric ones being noise and/or slow.

Get the one named "GunVault." U can find the standard one for less than $100, or the GunVault Deluxe for about $115. I got the Deluxe because it also has a built in motion alarm, a light inside, and U can tell if someone has been tampering with the combination, trying to guess. Since I bought it as a child proof thing, I wanted those features.

They make a standard size and a tall one, so with the combination of the regular gun vault, the gun vault deluxe, and the 2 sizes, there are 4 models to choose from.

I have been happy with it.

If U just want the regular Gunvault, some stores even sell them - like Academy Sports.

I don't want a huge safe for two reasons, I dont have enough room and I will probably only be able to buy one gun a year or so untill I turn 18 because my mom thinks they are a waste of money.

I have the bimedics safe. I got it for Christmas. It is a great safe. NOONE will get in it unless you let them. That said it is not fireproof. It does have a backup battery. It is a good safe and I know it will keep the kids out. Someone can find a key or see your combination and this is a fingerprint scan. Even if they cut your finger off it will not open. Somehow it can tell. So as for security it is great.

I got the multivault for $51 out the door. For the price I am happy with it but I wouldn’t consider it much more than an easy access lock box. I bolted mine down so it could not be picked up and carried away but I am sure a screw driver or hammer would make quick work of the locking mechanism.
