I've just started loading the .45acp for my USP .45. 200 grain JSWC/Titegroup. Very happy with this combo. The pistol doesn't seem to have any problem digesting the JSWCs (Hornady).
As we all know, prices are going through the roof for components.
I'm looking at a Jarvis barrel just for loading commercial cast and maybe casting my own someday.
However, scubbing lead is my least favorite thing in shooting.

Anyone try pre lubing the barrel with Moly (Molybdenum Disulfide IIRC)?

Anyone use a second barrel just for lead?

Midway has Oregon Trail laser cast bullets for very reasonable prices, anyone shoot them in .45acp?

Recomendations?

Buy good hard cast bullets and there probably will not be a leading problem. 45ACP velocities should not be a problem with a good hard cast bullet. Get the Jarvis!

I shoot cast bullets exclusively in my .45 ACP 1911's and .44 Mag S&W revolvers. Whenever possible I use hard cast bullets lubed with ALOX lube (50% ALOX and 50% beeswax). This is a fairly soft lube but is excellent for preventing leading. I get ZERO leading in my .45's and very little in my .44 mag's at velocities up to 1425 fps (thru chronograph). For .45 ACP have used cast bullets sized .451, .4515, and .452 with equally good results. A few quick passes with brass brush dipped in Shooter's Choice Bore Cleaner followed by dry patch/wool mop followed by patch lightly wetted with FP-10 and my barrels are ready for the next shooting session. Have never had the need to consider extra barrel just for cast lead bullets. Would strongly advise against shooting swaged (soft) lead bullets as they are much more likely to lead the barrel.

Good shooting and be safe.

The USP has a polygonal bore, not a conventional rifled bbl. Hence the need to be cautious with lead bullets......

Same boat.

In the past, I've had very good luck with Oregon Trail Lasercast bullets in my 45 USPs. However, it has been several years since I did so, and at that time, the price differential between lead and the WCB plated bullets was trivial, so I went back to the plated as they worked perfectly and without the mess of lube in the dies, etc. Today, plated and jacketed bullets are easily 2X the price, so time to revisit.

I just ordered 1000 200gr SWCs from Oregon Trail and will give them a try, including a close look at how many rounds I can shoot before leading is apparent.

With regards to Moly. A friend gave me 400 230gr RN moly bullets from a manufacturer who's name escapes me now (well known name, Buffalo? Don't recall.) I was unable to get the accuracy I've come to expect from my reloads (all 10 in the X at 25 yards). I also had leading after 100 rounds. These bullets were very slippery and looked great, but too soft for my USPs (my 1911s loved them).

I'll report back as soon as I've had a chance to work up the loads and properly test.
