HK4. First pistol built and sold by H&K. I have one (1974) with probably 2 mags through it in it's life. Purchased it
from the original owner that bought it and put it in the sock drawer to be virtually forgotten about.

This pistol is a convertible. From the factory, it came available with either 2 calibers,
or 4. The two caliber model came with .22LR and by means of a barrel and mag change, .380. The 4 caliber model came as
.22, .25, .32, and .380. I bought mine for a song compared to it's value in the mint condition it was in.

I picked this up as a collectible, safe queen, trophy. Had told myself I was not going to shoot it. The urge to test it got
the better of me. Somehow (first HK4 I've seen), the condition of the recoil buffer got past me. Was intact and looked fine
but for the color of it. It was seriously aged and brittle.

Jump ahead decades to last Sunday. Six rounds mags with .380 barrel installed. 5th round fired, slide did not "quite"
return to battery. A pretty gentle nudge got it into position and 6th round went fine. Fresh mag inserted. 1st shot ok, 2nd
shot and the slide jams about 3/4 of the way open and will not budge.

Got home and got it apart. Crumbs of a material that looks like amber fall out. Frame damage behind where the buffer installs. Heartbreak.

Spent hours on phone with H&K and other HK specialty houses including Numrich

No luck. New frame buffers have not been made for this pistol for 29 years and I'm fearful of the frame being a scrap pile.
Sent the photo showing chipped frame to Adam at hkparts.com. He said it's not fatal (whew!) but I definitaly need new buffers before I can use it.
Says if I can find a new buffer, buy several.

Found this thread

Parts are on the way and my jewel is not fatal!!!

Two good things ended up coming from this.
1. Though my little mint safe queen is now damaged and lost it's collectible value, it is still usable.
2. Buffers are now available for these sweet little shooters.

Thank you. That's exactly how I felt.

But as I said, at least it will again be usable. The buffer channel is deep enough and the damage is shallow enough. Still, a DA** shame.

Only glad that I found parts to keep it usable and info to share.

THR has given me sooo much, this tiny piece of info may help someone else.

Ah man that sucks. Condolences. I'd be sad as hell. At least it's still shoot able though

When I bought my HK p9s, I opened it up and the buffer had withered away. Bought some at numrich. I extend my sympathies for your plight.

Man, that made my heart sink and my stomach turn. :(

Glad to hear that you will be able to get it into shooting condition again, though. Once that happens, you'll be able to shoot it without remorse.

Possible that it could be TIG welded. But, that will still affect the crystalline structure of the metal and may then require heat treatment. Already getting pricey for my budget.

Likely, it'll get the new buffer (I have 4 coming) and be designated for .22 use. I have read that it was kinda like the SP101 series... Could shoot .357 but not designed for continued use of full boat rounds which is why they built the GP series.

That the little HKs were ok for full time .32s but not recommended for continual .380.

I'm just glad and relieved that it will still be functional.

Is it possible that the frame could be welded up and repaired by a good smith?

Would love to in any condition!!!

>Now you can fix it up and use it as a shooter. Next time I'm down there we'll get in a little shooting; I'll bring some .380 ammo and a pistol of my own in that caliber.
