I was having a FTE on some my shotgun shells. I polished the chamber with a power drill and a brush for 15 minutes as suggested. All low priced steel Winchester’s and some Federals have the FTE issue. Some of the Federal shells have a certain spot that will cause a FTE repeatedly. Turn the shell slightly to a different spot and put it back in and it will fly out of the chamber. Any suggestions? Kind of sounds ironic that poor mans shotgun requires premium shells.

Does the ejector pop out when the gun is opened? If not... broken spring or the ejector mech. my need cleaning. I think that if you take the barrel off the receiver there is a large roll pin about mid way the block. If my memeory serves me, if you push the pin down the ejector should pop out under spring pressure. Google H&R Topper guns and there is a site that shows how to disassemble those type guns.

Winchester Xpert steel shot has given problems in my Mossberg and a couple of 870s I know about, sticks in the chamber and the extractors slip the rim. I don't know if the rim is just too small, or what, but they are a known problem. Not sure it's the cause of YOUR problem, just an issue I know about.

Hello
My name is Bill , I too have the same issue with the winchester xpert steel shot 3",with my 12ga NEF, fte the fired hulls , though my 20ga Pardner
has no problems with Winchester Drylock 3".
Have not had this problem with my Mav 88.
My NEF 12 ga has not had any ejection problems with lead shot or slugs and i shoot mainly winchester ammo. the only thing i think the problem for me is the ammo brand and gun combo.have yet too try other shell brands but will be before next season . By the way ,how old is your nef ? Mine is only 9yrs old and not even broke in still looks NIB, but it doe's get out for turkey's.

I polished the chamber with a power drill and a brush for 15 minutes as suggested.

Typically the brush should be loaded with 0000 steel whool . This usualy gives you a nice clean chamber ,but is not necessarily the end of a good chamber polishing job.

To complete I use a dremel polishing wheel (just a bit larger than the chamber) with grit, driven by a flex shaft. You don't have to turn it into a mirror, but this method allows for a much smoother finished surface.

don't tell 'em what you did w/the power drill!

Contact H&R 1871 - they have excellent customer service. All you would need to send in would be the barrel
