H.R. 297: NICS Improvement Act of 2007...McCarthy at it again!

NICS is an un-Constitutional infringement of our rights, does not keep violent criminals from obtraining firearms (no gun control does), yet has the effect of scaring law abiding citizens from obtaining weapons when needed.

As a result, NICS kills.

OK Im late to the game but this scares me.

When I was younger, I was on some anti-depressants such as Zoloft (starting when I was 16) - but later on the state said 'youre fine, shut up and get a job' and I did. I was fed the 'youre depressed' angle for years and then when I just gave it up I turned out much better.

This wouldnt prohibit me would it? I have passed NICS before.

Holy crap the NRA supports this?!!!
This bill would help fix those problems. It sets specific goals and timetables and details the records improvements that are required

Is this bizarro world?! Was there some super-horrible bill that they shot down and had to accept this in exchange? ***?

Does anybody actually read the three pages of posts explaining all this in detail before they post the same question that has been answered multiple times already?

Unseating an incumbent member of Congress is a difficult undertaking at best. Given the party demographics of McCarthy's district (Long Island, NY) and her party affiliation (D), I'd say, realistically, the seat is hers until she decides to retire.

I live on long island just 2 minutes from her district (unfortunately I can't vote her out). Don't confuse Nassau county Long Island politics with those of New York city. Republicans have until very recently had an almost unbreakable hold on Nassau county in fact before McCarthy the reps were:

Henry J. Latham, Republican, January 3, 1953 - December 31, 1958
Seymour Halpern, Republican, January 3, 1959 - January 3, 1963
John W. Wydler, Republican, January 3, 1963 - January 3, 1973
Norman F. Lent, Republican, January 3, 1973 - January 3, 1993
David A. Levy, Republican, January 3, 1993 - January 3, 1995
Daniel Frisa, Republican, January 3, 1995 - January 3, 1997

For nearly Forty years this district was uninterupted Republican territiory. Infact my rep is a republican though not really pro-gun. Some of her races against republicans have been very close.

But with the way the country has been moving away from the republican party in the last election I don't see her being unseated in 2008. But that's more a function of the back lash against Bush than her having an unbreakable hold on the political scene here.

Ironically she lives near my favorite gun store.

Young gun:

Re the Republican congresspersons you listed, one question.

What is or was their position regarding firearms legislation, gun control proposals, that virtually without exception impact adversely on the law abiding.

Not every Democrat is anti gun, not every Republican is pro gun.

This is the thread for people to read if they think NICS needs "improvement". This is what the NRA is advocating. Read the bill closely, it's crap.

David

No need to read and try to make sense of this proposed garbage, simply read the last four words of the heading!

"To improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and for other purposes."

Don't let poorly considered NRA support of this item keep you from joining NRA...NRA remains the most important and effective pro-gun organization in their publicising gun legislation at every level of government nationwide and in organization of pro-gun effort.

I am taking this particular issue up with the NRA, telling them they have made a mistake...you should do the same...and that is most effectively done as a member.;)
