Just got a H&R Handi Rifle in 45-70. The question is would you use the mordern load data for it? I have one in 223/243 so I think the pressures with the 45-70 would be OK if used with the higher pressure load data. Am I correct. Also has anyone found a good load/bullet combo that I could work up to with less trial and experimenting? Looking for 100 YD data.

I had a H&R for about 2 years. It was a fun/handy little rifle. I used 300JHP with 50-51gr of IMR 3031 for my accurate load at 100yds. I also used a 405 JSP and Reloader 7, don't remember the charge. I quite at the Marlin level because the action started to pop open on the upper level loads. I later sold it and bought a Ruger #1 and mainly shoot cast bullets now. Still use 3031 but dang near any medium burn rate powder will work for it, Varget, 4895, H335, 748, etc. I love the ole 45/70. If you handload and cast bullets for it, it opens a lot of doors.

I would think the Marlin level loads would be all your shoulder could stand in a 7 pound Handi-Rifle anyway.
