Here's an interesting one, didn't see this posted -- proposed by a Florida legislator
H.R.4953 - To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to subject to the requirements of the National Firearms Act
any semiautomatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine.

This is certainly more sneaky than going for a new AWB, and perhaps it signals a new tactic. Doubtful if the bill could even get out of committee, but... here we go.

'Course, some of us now live in states where the venerable 10-22 is considered an "assault rifle" and have to get special training and background checks just to buy one...

We cannot read the submitted bill, yet, as of the evening of August 8. The linked page at Congress.gov on the text tab says
"As of 08/09/2021 text has not been received for H.R.4953 - To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to subject to the requirements of the National Firearms Act any semiautomatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine"
Use the same link to read the bill once available

I will be interested to read the actual language, given that the title itself would make a 10/22 and other semi-auto .22LR rifles NFA guns.

The bill covers shotguns as well as rifles.

Also, it appears that the text would exempt tube-loaded .22 rifles, but not 10/22 type magazine loaded .22 rifles: "ammunition feeding device’ means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device, but does not include an attached tubular device which is only capable of operating with .22 caliber rimfire ammunition."....
