Hello everyone. Recently purchased an H & R 999 Sportsman. I can pull back the hammer about 3/4 inch without it engaging the spring. I thought maybe it had a plastic head on the spring rod that was broken. Checked it out and the head is steel. Any ideas on why the hammer doesn't engage the spring immediately? Thanks.

The mainspring follower (guide) should be in contact with the hammer when the hammer is at rest, so there shouldn't be any distance before the hammer contacts the spring.

Maybe it is silly, but does the mainspring and guide assembly have the little retaining pin that keeps the parts together in shipping or for disassembly? If so, put the guide in place, cock the hammer and remove the pin.

Jim

Not exactly sure what you are asking. How about taking a photo with the stocks off? I've had 999's for decades and never had any issue like you're describing.

H & R Problem

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the response. The head of the spring rod does rest on the hammer. When I cock the hammer, the head slides down for a half inch before it starts compressing the spring. There is no hole in the bottom of the spring rod in order to keep the spring compressed for removal. Getting the assembly out is no problem. I just don't know how to get it back in. I showed it to a local gunsmith today, but he said he does not work on top break revolvers. I will try to submit a picture. Thanks again.

I think we need a picture. The concave curved head of the mainspring guide should fit fairly closely into its convex area in the hammer; it shouldn't slide anywhere.

Weird.

My first thought is someone put the wrong spring in there, or it is a broken spring that coiled in on itself. But a broken spring would be pretty clear to see.

Yet, I don't know how the spring pin (rod) could stay in contact with the hammer without a proper length spring on it.

Gentlemen, Sorry if I posted this on the wrong thread. I think it is likely that the wrong spring assembly is installed. I have an H & R 676 and the hammer engages the spring immediately, as it should. Also the spring is a lot stronger in that revolver. I took some pictures, but I haven't been able to figure out how to download them. The image icon requests an url and they are not on the web. Sorry. I'll try to figure it out. Thanks again.

Yep. That's it, but dimensions are not given. A lot of those products look very similar. If you need measurements to confirm that you in fact do have the wrong piece let me know.

Thanks. I looked at the picture closely and noticed that the small cylinder between the guide head and the spring is missing in my gun. I decided to go ahead and order the part from Numrich. I think it should solve the problem. Thanks for all your help.

It seems like you got it sorted out. Be sure to pop back in and let us know the final results. :)
