My shotgun search has led me to used racks (870 vs M12) but I started looking with the Maverick 88 in mind.
So going down this fork in the road brings me to the pardner pump.
I'm leaning towards a 20 ga mind you, just think it'll lend itself to all day family fun better than a 12ga. It will be used for clay birds at the range, nothing too serious yet.
The pardner has two things in its favor- its a little less money and can be had with Walnut furniture.
However the mav seems like a better gun, simply because its made by Mossberg in the US and the pardner comes from turkey... Or China... Still a little fuzzy on that...
I think if I got the mav I would opt for the combo with HD and field barrels, while the pardner would just have a field barrel, thus creating a bigger price gap.

Its just the wood... And if I went with the pardner I'd save a few bucks overall...

I'm not ready to buy yet. I'm having fun poking thru the racks, but I keep coming back to the mav as the best, safest bet.

Does the Maverick field barrels have interchangeable choke tubes?
Also, it looks like its only available with a 26" VR barrel in 20ga... So no combo if I want to stay with 20.
I do like the short barrel option... Probably no real need, I would not keep this bedside & I don't expect zombie hords this summer...
Its a $30 difference to get the combo in 12ga vs the field only in 20ga.

Your decision is basically the same as 500 vs. 870. The Maverick is essentially a Mossberg 500, so you can install any after market stocks, barrels, etc. made for the 500. Since the Pardner Pump is a sorta copy of the Remington 870 and not a true clone, some 870 accessories won't fit.

I also would go with the Maverick 88. Bought it originally as a PGO with the 18.5" barrel mainly because that was the only one I could find at really low price. Added a synthetic stock and an extra field barrel (24" vent rib with choke tubes), in case I ever want to take it out hunting. It has been a dependable and reliable shotgun for quite a number of years and will probably remain that way for many more years to come.

I also have a Winchester Model 1300 in 20 gauge that's pretty much set-up the same way with an 18" barrel for home defense, a 24" vent rib barrel with Winchokes, and a 28" vent rib barrel with Winchokes for hunting.

I have a partner 12 ga. with a 18" barrel that lives in my jeep. fired it a few times, seems solid. If you are buying used, I would search for a 870 express.

I have had both. Maverick was a well built gun. Pardner was a cheap Chinese clone that was heavy and needed work right out of the box...Nothing crazy, just burrs cleaned up, and plastic mag follower had to be replaced because it was broken in the first 100 rounds.

The 20 ga. Pardner I bought for our County 4-H (I was a leader) patterned to the left. I had to pull the barrel, rotate the mag tube 90 deg., until it was shooting up instead of to the left. Works for Trap. I got it on clearance at work (Walmart) cheap. My brother in law bought one, and except being overly heavy, it was mechanically fine. I still say get a used 870.

I'm my other "12 vs 870" thread I was reconsidering one of the 870s I saw...
What do you think is a fair price on a well used, good condition, 870 wing master in 20 ga w/ 2 barrels?
I know its hard to judge w/o seeing it... But your best guess....

They're asking $575 but have a lot of used shotguns so maybe I can beat them up a bit:)

I like the 870 action better than the Mossberg 500, but between a "mostly American made" Maverick 88 and a chinese Pardner Pump I'd get the Maverick. The Pardner isn't always 100% parts compatible with the 870 but the Maverick is 100% compatible with the Mossberg 500 so you'll never have problems finding parts for that one.

I prefer the Maverick 88. I prefer the crossbolt safety to be in front of the trigger as opposed to behind like in the 870. I have done research into how compatible the Pardner pump is with 870 parts and the general consensus is "have a Dremel tool ready, because it might not be."

I had a pardner pump 12 for a bit, wanted a pump gun and didn't have much money at the time. Had to use a dremel on the barrel to smooth things up as fired shells were getting stuck. After that, didn't have an issue with it.

Things I remember about it- it was heavy. Not sure how much of that was due to the receiver being a bit bigger (had that "hump") or the thick polymer stock- maybe a combo of both. Parts interchangeability could be an issue. There are reports of some items like stocks and fore-ends fitting, but I haven't heard much of anything about things like the trigger group, bolt, extractor- all that other stuff that's inside the gun.

Since the saftey on the Maverick is on the trigger group whereas it's on the receiver for the Mossberg, the trigger group is not 100% compatible.

Individual components within the trigger group may or may not be swappable.

Both the Mossberg and Maverick are made in the same Eagle Pass TX facility.

Unless someone can provide any evidence of violating the Federal Trade Commission, the Maverick is just as much "Made in USA" as any other product that claims to be 'Made in USA".

I'd get the Maverick.

It's my understanding that the trigger group will switch between them and function, but if you put a 500 trigger group into a Maverick you won't have a safety, and a Maverick trigger group in a 500 will simply have a second safety.

The final assembly of the gun is done in Eagle Pass TX, though some of the sub-assemblies are built in Mexico. This labeling doesn't violate any FTC laws and it's a pretty common practice in many industries. It's legally "Made in the USA" but still worth putting in quotes IMHO.

I understand it's pretty common. I deal with it almost everyday M-F.

That was my point in saying that its just as much made in USA as anything else that makes the claim.

I don't see putting it in quotes being worth it unless you put it quotes for EVERYthing making the claim. That is, unless you're trying to single out Maverick.... with unsubstantiated reasons.

To make the claim, it has to be "all or virtually all" according to the FTC. That includes labor and raw materials.

What does "all or virtually all" mean?
"All or virtually all" means that all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. That is, the product should contain no — or negligible — foreign content.
