Got my first shotgun today: An H&R Topper Deluxe: 3.5" chamber, 28" barrel with bead sight, modified choke tube.

All I need to do now is figure out a good way to schlep it around on the motorcycle... Any suggestions?

Congrats on the new shotgun. A couple things...

As I recall, unscrewing the bolt holding the forearm on and removing that, then tilting the barrel down is how to take it apart. Carrying disassembled is a good idea on a scooter. Don't forget to bring along the screwdriver.

Start off shooting 2 3/4" shells. It has a 3.5" chamber, but even a veteran shotgunner will get a new one torn touching off a long round in that sub 6 lb bantamweight. Buy the Superlights and use those. Even a 7/8 oz load will work fine for training.

I'll be shooting Sunday at PGC, see other thread. Feel free to join me...

Will breaking down these NEF/H&R shotguns wear them out? I'm wondering how unscrewing and screwing that forearm back on and off will affect it?

Are they designed to be able to break them down regularly, like a double?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve:

I don't expect that breaking the guns down will cause them any harm. They're really pretty axe-simple. All the screw does is hold the forearm to the barrel; the forearm itself is all that stops you from pulling the barrel up and out of the action.

Of course, I could be entirely wrong, but I've never heard of any problems with breaking the H&R guns down. I broke mine down today to take it trap shooting, and will again without any qualms.

(I sucked at trap today. I blame it on getting used to a new gun... That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)
