I just won a Model B at an online auction. It's designed for .22 LR, but I'm wondering if it is safe to shoot CCI Mini Mag and other beefed-up modern cartridges.

I wouldn't -- that's a fine old pistol, and the battering from higher-velocity ammo will eventually break something. And replacement parts for High Standards can be hard to find.

I use nothing but standard high-velocity ammo (Wal-Mart bulk pack) in the Holy Grail (my Colt Woodsman made in 1938) -- it's too valuable to risk breaking just to squeeze out a bit more velocity.

Thanks! I am replacing the relevant springs before taking her out to the range, but it's a good idea not to stress an old machine.

Does your Woodsman prefer Fed or Remmy bulk pack?

Remington. It feeds them slick as a greased pig and shoots 1 3/4" groups at 25 yards -- from a modified weaver grip, not from a rest.

(Since I don't hunt from a rest or carry one when I'm in the woods, I've never bothered to try it from a rest.)
