I picked up a box of 165 gr Speer Deepcurls, a pound of H4831, and some CCI large rifle primers. I can't find any data for that powder/bullet combo. Speers website lists IMR 4831 starting 54 gr and max 58(compressed). I'm assuming that these powders are similar, but not identical. I don't have the time to start from the min and work my way up, so I figured I would start 2-3 gr under max and go from there. Anybody got the starting and max loads for H4831 in 30-06 shooting 165gr Speer Deepcurls? Pet loads would also be appreciated.
Thanks, CApighunter

the Speer #14 manual doesn't list H4831 with the 165 gr bullets. it lists H4831SC and IMR4831.

it does, however, list H4831 with a 168 gr BTHP. it lists a start load of 56.0 and a max of 61.0C

to put things in perspective, for 165 gr bullets with IMR 4831, they list a start load of 55.0 and a max of 59.0. for the 168 gr bullet with IMR 4831, they list a start load of 56.0 and a max of 60.0.

you should be able to glean a decent starting point from that data. use it at your own risk.

I can't find any data for that powder/bullet combo.
There is a reason for that.

H-4831 & IMR-4831 are both too slow burning for best performance with bullets lighter then probably 180 grain in the 30-06.

You will get a lot of noise and big fireballs, but not as much velocity as you could get with a slightly faster powder like 4350 or 4064.

Look here for load data. I cannot find any data for that powder either, I agree with RC, not a good 30-06 powder.

Pick up some H4350. Best thing I've found for a 30-06. I'm getting 2900 fps with 165's from my 22" barrels and 1/2" groups are the norm. I get 3025 fps with 150's and 2800 fps with 180's. And that is not with max book loads, anywhere from .5-1 grain below max. I can get another 50 fps with max loads, but groups open up to 1"

I'll add my voice to 4381 being too slow a powder in the 30-06. Like said above, buy some H4350, IMR4064 or even 4895 for those 165gr bullets. You will get much better performance.

I had excellent accuracy with 4831 & 165g. 61.0 grains. Speer lists 60-62.0 with H4831SC - not sure of the SC (short cut) changes the loading. Lyman book shows 56.0 - 62.0 for H4831. If I were starting from scratch I'd use 4350 or 4064 though.

I get terrific results from H4831sc in my .270. Load data for H4831 and H4831sc are identical. I use IMR 4350, IMR 4064, IMR 4895, H4895, Varget and RL 15 in .30-06. All work well.

Thanks guys, just bought some IMR-4350. Will load up some rounds tomorrow.
With IMR4350 and a 165/168gr bullet I get the best results with 57.0gr but work up to that charge. It's not the max charge listed by Hodgdon but it's very accurate for me.

If you switch over to H4350 you can up the charge to 58.0gr under the same weight bullets... (again not a max charge)
