H4831 load ideas?

A friend of mine just gave me a 1 lb can and a 1gal. jug of Hogdon 4831, and a 1lb can on IMR 4198. I am about to start loading for 8x57mm mauser(for a k98) and .30-06 (my Rem. 1917 sporter(bolt)). I have some .30-06 brass and just ordered some 8mm brass, 170gr. 8mm Hornady bullets, 150gr .30cal Hornady FMJ bullets. I was wondering if any one used H4831 for 8mm or .30-06 with these bullet weights? Could any one give me any load advise?

H4831 is "usable" in the 8x57, but velocities will be low with max. with compressed charges.

Lee #2 gives 57.0gr as max and is compressed for 2,418fps with a 170gr bullet. Pressure is very low. start is 53.0gr and is also a compressed load.

The best powder for the 8mm is BL-C2. It will give over 2,800fps w/ 53.0gr at ~48,000cup. (max. taken from Hodgdon "basic reloaders manual 2005).

The H4831 excells in the .30/06 with 180gr and heavier bullets.
I've used 58.0gr under a 180gr bullet for 2,750fps (24"bbl)
It's of course even better with 190-220gr bullets.

With the 150gr bullet, the H4831 is again too slow for best results.
I prefer the BL-C2, Reloader15, and IMR4064 in the '06 with 150gr bullets. And, of course, H4895....

I've been using H4831 surplus for many years in the 30-06. It's a bit on the slow end for 150gr bullets, but it will still work OK.
My standard load is a compressed charge with a 165.
I'm careful nowadays to keep my old standby 30-06 loads separated from my M1 loads, though, as I recently acquired a couple Garands, and a compressed charge of slow powder would not be good for them.

I've never used it in an 8mm. I think it would work, but you probably would not obtain optimal velocities. The good part is, I doubt you could get enough H4831 in the case to cause any problems pressure-wise. Of course it's always best to consult a reputable loading manual.
